On August 6, 1945 the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, the 2nd one (on Nagasaki) was dropped 3 days later. The will of the empire of Japan wasn't broken until the 2nd bomb was dropped, when the Japanese feared they could be literally wiped from the face of the earth, but until that 2nd bomb they were willing to fight to the last man, woman and child. It took 6 days after the 2nd bomb for Japan to surrender.
I'm only glad that the decision whether to bomb or send American lives to face the Japanese in their homeland, who were not known for humane treatment of their prisoners, wasn't up to me.
