I'm not saying that Crossfit isnt the way to go but you can pick up any beginners weight lifting program online and get great results. Which is what I have done.
The purpose for any of my work out programs that i follow right now is to get stronger. StrongLifts 5x5 really concentrates on that. http://stronglifts.com/
I dont know about your gym but Crossfit is fucking expensive to do anywhere around here.

Cost me about $100 a month right now. The other thing is that I can get some instruction from someone which is useful as I develop my form.

awesome! Ive learned everything on my own so far, so "fine tuning" my form is what ive been lacking. I'll take your pointers into account next thursday when it is time to DL again.

Can you make the 3rd pic show up? I could only see 2 of them.

I can only see two pictures... and I'm the last one to comment on DL form, but I generally thought it looked pretty good. NO BLOODY SHINS! I did notice the "work around the knee" issue once Vid pointed it out, and that's what I really struggle with as well (totally fucks up my back). As I mentioned before, it really helped me by focusing on two separate movements per Vid's recommendation: lift with knees; extend hips.

Got in a nice 24 mile MTB ride this weekend with 2800 feet of climbing. Chest, bis, and tris today with some ab work thrown in.

Anyone ever try yoga/hot yoga? :erm:

Yes I took my first yoga class last week and weds I will take another. Weekly one at the box. It is not an intense yoga class but it was good enough for me to break a sweat.

I've heard it can be a pretty good workout and obviously good for flexibility. My wife is picking up hot yoga and I might have to give it a try (yay yoga pants!).

yea the stretching was pretty good. My fiance is very flexible (her nickname as the gym is flexifay) so that yoga was pretty easy for her.

Any of you dudes practice martial arts? I haven't read through the whole thread. I was kind of entertaining the idea, never tried any before.
I'm tall and want to kick people.
I don't want to break boards or join a belt factory.
I also don't want to beat the shit out of anyone or get my teeth knocked out in a ring or cage.
wat do

anyways, kickboxing sounds about right - you don't have to compete if you don't want to, obviously

yoga is awesome, i went to a couple of sessions at the last gym i worked at where we had classes and everything, i found it hard to keep it consistent with the job as i usually had clients around that time. now that i don't have clients i'm at a gym that doesn't offer it, sooo - shit outta luck. it's a great idea though, and in hindsight would've prevented a lot of my problems - for sure.

Yeah, I guess you aren't trying to knock each other out when sparring
The super intimidating image I had in my head was dispelled after I started checking stuff out today.
I might have to give it a try sometime.
edit: There are no, like, American kickboxing-style places around me, but there's a place that offers Muay Thai and has a lot of good reviews...I'm gonna go for it once I get some money.

I saw that video earlier today. Loved it.

Muay Thai is awesome. I think it's better than kickboxing.

I've gotten a pretty good mix of most martial arts, except the chinese styles like Wu Shu, Wing Tsun and Kung Fu. I think the whole "belt factory" idea changes depending on what school you end up at. Some schools push belt exams and other formal things so they can charge additional fees, but in the end, a belt is just that; a belt. Russian Sambo doesn't even use a belt system (in Russia anyway), you advance by winning a given number of competitive matches.

That said, pick a style that you think looks cool. You can train in almost any style without being forced to compete.

About the whole muay-thai vs kickboxing thing, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. I imagine that "American" style kickboxing is more like the MMA of kickboxing, if that makes sense. Our style applies japanese karate ploys and techniques and mixes them with muay thai.
