restaining a gibson/epi faded

Post by ryan summit »

im going to get a faded brown sg soon
whether its a gibson or epi
ill see what the loot situation is at the time
my problem is the dream guitar in my head
has a black stained finish like a voodoo
when i get the faded
im definately gonna get bored
and start sanding and staining it
without any guitar finish experience
any tips or advice for me
besides just buy a voodoo
im also considering getting a kit
and starting from scratch
but for this thread refinishing is the goal
thanks and pics of your finishes is always helpful

Reranch has a coupla super useful guides if you don't go blind reading them.
I used a heat gun + scraper to get the paint off. Some people use chemical strippers, but I couldn't be bothered with cleaning that up.
The worst part of it for me was getting rid of the sealer beneath the paint...that shit is made to withstand nuclear attacks. It took hours and hours to break through it 'cause I was being way too cautious as it was my first refinish too.
Don't be scurr'd to use rougher grit sandpaper until you start to break through the sealer. Also, sand with the grain and it'll be just fine.
Here's my jawn...

I know there are a few ILFers who have refinished their guitars, so feel free to ask questions, dood.

the reason i was gonna go with the faded
is cause theres no paint on it
its got the exposed grain
but im sure the sealer is gonna be the same situation

theres a bunch of other forums
with the same question asked
but it seems more of a debate
and the red undertones not important
just the ebony grain
and i will take NO for an answer
