(OK, well, maybe the Portland of 10 years ago?)

My thoughts exactly.

The main thing I'm not so sure about is that it's significantly more expensive than here. Also, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE is moving to Portland. Seems like it would be super-rough to get a job in that kind of environment. :idk:

Yeah, that's why I said the Portland of ten years ago. It is getting much more expensive and hard to find work.

I thought people moved to Portland to NOT work... ? :idk: Seems everyone I know (or know of) who lives there has like 6 part-time jobs they just do once in awhile.

 I've been to Austin a couple times with my tattooer friend for the convention in January, and he describes Austin as "like Portland, but if most everyone had jobs."

I liked the NW a lot, but I don't miss the crazy hipster-bum action going on up there.

Someone tell me more about Portland ME. I am intrigued.

Milwaukee. It has winter. A lot of winter.

But other than that, it is a great city with a fantastic music scene. Every time we go there, I think "we should really move here"

My wife REALY wants to move to austin. I lived there for a couple years and its was pretty cool. Biggest factor is cheap land. I need to be away from neighbors so I can be loud.
My wife also likes to hold drum circles and that usually does not go over well with neighbors when there is 30-40 pagans naked/half neked drumming and dancing around a bon fire in my back yard.

Move to Canada. Vancouver is better than Seattle or Portland combined. Toronto and the whole GTA is diverse; also bike friendly. Halifax is poor as fuck, but it's a college town so everyone else is too, and plenty of bars.

Avoid:
Calgary - IT WILL NEVER SHAKE ITS COWBOY IMAGE. Also not bike friendly. Or public transit friendly.
Winnipeg - All the negatives of living in Canada in one spot: Winter is long and cold, summer is short and gross; and in the middle of nowhere.
Montreal - Nothing really bad, just if don't know French or know someone living there, it will feel like your stuck in a foreign country.

Thanks! I haven't gotten around to researching this kind of stuff very in-depth yet.

@ Derelict: Austin IS pretty cool, I have to admit. I just dunno if I can hang with the heat throughout the summer.....plus there are seriously world-class tattooers there (look up Perfection Tattoo). And isn't Austin supposed to be supportive of being weird or something like that...... also your backyard sounds like something I wish I had every time a solstice or equinox, etc happens.

Canada sounds interesting, if it's reasonably doable. I know so little about the immigration laws and red tape. BUT, I have been scraping the dust off of my 5-6 years of French from back in the high school days, so Montreal is intriguing....I'm relearning kinda quick. Any more info on Canada (Vancouver, Montreal, etc....)? What's the music scene like in Montreal?

You guys are the best! :hello:

I'm bringing this thread back because I'm up visiting Seattle and seeing great shows and it's really making me not wanna go home, where there's nothing cool for a guy like me to do. When does the weather start getting shitty in the NE? Specifically in Portland me? If i can swing it, i wanna try and visit, check it out...

The NE usually has a decent September, October is a wild card. I distinctly remember a bunch of Halloweens where we had snow on the ground. This was in western NY, so the probability likely increases as you travel north...

There're generally a lot of tourists up that way in October due to leaf season.

Toronto has insane rent, a terrible music scene, and the best 1970s transit system anyone could ask for.
The lake is great though.

I grew up just outside of Toronto, lived downtown for a while, and I'm not just outside of it again. It's honestly a really cool, and relatively safe city with a huge body of water, but so full of shitty music. Everyone seems so caught up in trying to be cool and this idea of maintaining an image that they all skipped the step of actually forming a decent band.

Don't get me wrong, there is some really cool stuff happening here, but there is so much bullshit. I'm in a band in Toronto, and I think we've played with maybe 2 bands I wasn't already familiar with that impressed me. Pretty annoying.

Maybe that's every city though.

But, if I spoke even a little french, I would totally move to Montreal. Things seem pretty happening there. Also, cheap rent, and yes, the rumours you've heard are true. Cuties everywhere.
