I'm straight. No problems with LGBT. I don't have a problem per se with flaming/flaunting/flamboyancy (whatever you want to call it) but I do think it is kind of tasteless, in the same way I think overt displays of affection between straight people in public are tasteless.

What I'm really ashamed of is the level of homophobia in Rap music. It's all cool to call somebody a faggot when you're a rapper. But in theory,that's the same thing as someone using the "n" word in regards to them. Doesn't make a whole lotta sense. I support peoples' rights to love/fuck who they want,and if the rest of the world would,then living here(not just the deep south,but the world) would be far less shitty. Who fuckin' cares? I'd rather people fall in love/fuck each other than kill each other,ya know?

honestly with the rap i listen to i have not noticed a lot of homophobia. i know it's an issue but i definitely think it's a crazy overblown one that is definitely on the way out. (lil b's i'm gay is kind of important. also dude calls himself a pretty boy bitch and it's like, a positive thing.) but like black male sexuality and masculinity and the expression of is a really complicated thing that's like, mirrored in (and maybe even further complicated by) rap.

Well, at one time, either one could be shouted at you while you were being beaten or dragged behind a truck. (I guess in some parts that could still happen)

There was never a time when they were slaves, of course, but both gays and blacks have a fairly long history of mistreatment in this country. You can at least hide being gay, though it's a pretty shitty way to live.

Outside of modern western culture, the issue is much more complicated. But, frankly, any level of inequality and mistreatment for a person just being who they are is unacceptable. The only proper response to in any form of racism, homophobia, sexism, etc is, "Shut up, Cletus. The grown ups are talking."

while we're on the subject of rap and homophobia, Die Antwoord released like an "explanation video" for their new single off of their new album, and the explanation is entitled "faggot" basically explaining that to the south african social consciousnesses "nigga" isn't held down as an oppressive or "only we can use that" term, which is my personal experience with it too, growing up in a pretty sketchy neighborhood, and thats the side i choose on the own v. disown debate on the word. but being more relevant, DJ Hi-Tek finally shows his "face" and his verse uses faggot a shitton, and Ninja is basically explaining that Hi-Tek is gay himself and sorta uses faggot in the same sense as above, in that he uses (or at least intends) to use it as a show of dominance over the power the word once had or whatever.

but yeah, its kinda interesting that the big hip-hop stars lately have been relatively less testosterone driven than before. Li'l Wayne is kinda the exception, but his latest album was so soft (and terrible) im gonna add him in anyway; you have like Kanye, Drake (for better or worse), Kid Cudi, etc.

That was the sole comparison I sought to make-is that they are both slurs. Slur is a slur is a slur=Neither has a less negative connotation than the other. If your tight enough to use either with your circle of friends,it's one thing,I suppose. But again,a slur is a slur is a slur

Hate and abuse in western countries (which is where things have been focussed so far, and where I'm assuming all/most of us live) is bad, but there are still a lot of places in africa and the middle east where homosexuality is punished by death, either officially or just by some dude who's probably known this gay person all their life and liked them fine until they heard that OH NO S/HE'S GAY. That sort of thing just makes me want to crawl into a hole and give up, because seriously, what the hell?

That's exactly why I have a problem with people who give the whole "I don't mind gays but why do they have to be so upfront about it?" speech. There wouldn't need to be pride parades if there weren't still people who think it's something to be ashamed of.

I understand that, and I know it's for the better to have parades and vocalize yourself, I think it's great that the LGBT community has the balls to do that... but that's in theory. Don't you think it's counterproductive to do more suggestive things, i.e. dry humping & costumes and what not? It seems to do more harm than good, it just gives bigots fuel to say "OH look at this fruit, this is why I don't like them"
