i really want a looper to use for in-song texturizing inspired by the stuff Jonny Greenwood does on the coda to "Where I End And You Begin" on Hail To The Thief.

Gin & Juice inspired many a purchase of Tanqueray. Which I still find gross.

While we're on the topic. When I went to see them Dustin had this awfully cool looking/sounding beat up white jaguar thing with different coloured p-90's or something. Got any intel on that?

Yeah, it's a jaguar body and controls, with a longer scale neck and a tune-o-matic.

The most direct influence for me to buy an effect was when I first heard "Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains. My buddy and I were taking guitar lessons at the time and just really getting into it. We watched the video "world premier" on MTV (yes, they used to play videos back then) and were blown away. Several months later, they transcribed it in Guitar World, and the notes mentioned a wah pedal as key to the sound. So then I had to have one, and I got it for Christmas in 1991, as I recall. Although it's possible that it was actually Xmas 92 before I got it. It's kinda fuzzy.

You have to understand that back then, there was no "Internets", and in the small redneck place I grew up, there were no cool music stores. I had to drive an hour to get to decent place to buy gear, and I was way too young to drive. So I learned about effects very slowly and had no access to try anything without buying it first. It was a sad, sad time back then.

After picking up Big Blacks "Atomizer" I ended up buying a Boss Dr. Rhythm drum machine and a Fostex 4 track and going to town making noise.

Tom Morello inspired me to get a whammy when I was really into rage. Got bored of and sold it though, I don't think I've bought anything because of a band/song since.

all three of my Les Pauls came from particular songs. the Epiphone Les Paul Custom, which was the first, i bought because i tried one out at Guitar Center on a lark and its sound was perfect for one on my original songs. the TV yellow single-cut Tokai LP Special with P90s i bought specifically for the sound Jerry Garcia gets on the version of "Hard to Handle" from 8/6/71 that appears on the Grateful Dead's Fallout From The Phil Zone CD. and the sunburst Tokai LP Standard is my Duane Allman guitar--though i seldom use it for that sound--and is entirely a product of the years i spent playing "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed."

effects-wise, my Sound Shank, being a Buzzaround clone, is all about Robert Fripp and particularly the dense, compressed sound he used on the Fripp/Eno albums on tracks like "Evening Star."
