them's fightin' words

Post by deadbeatriot »

jfrey wrote:And they were really hardcore about not letting any fighting go on. Fighting is probably the most normal thing in the world.

this quote, and subsequent responses, got me wondering what you crazy fucks thought about violence. and i didn't feel like diggin through that genderless kid thread anymore, so i figured i'd start a new discussion.

i used to box, and i still love watching combat sports of any kind - boxing, mma, wrestling, jiu jitsu, judo, etc, etc, etc.

i'm also a christian, which only serves to complicate my feelings on the matter.

i absolutely love the rush of being in fights. i don't even feel the hits until the next day (when i can't even roll out of bed). something about giving as good as you get appeals to me in a rather intense way.

i don't think violence for no reason is right. and i think violence for the wrong reason is inexcusable (i.e., physically assaulting someone due to differences in beliefs or racial background). but for some twisted reason, i can't help but feel like if two people, regardless of gender, are at a relatively inconsequential impasse, why not duke it out for a little?

obviously there are a hell of a lot more arguments against that then there are for it. but i know what i think, and i know that probably won't change any time soon. so i wanted to know what you guys thought.

i shall leave y'all with one of my favorite quotes:
renzo gracie wrote:(people) see fighting as an ugly thing; as a thing that denigrates the human being. in reality, i see fighting in everything... everything's fighting. doesn't matter what it is. you wake up in the morning, to get out of bed is a fight. believe it. so fighting is actually the best thing a man can have in his soul.

Been living for 19 years without getting into a proper fight

I'm generally far, FAR too apathetic about things to care about getting into a physical altercation; most of my anger and frustration I vent out through my music. But I've been in a few fights, and they're always triggered by the same thing: a lack of respect. Not towards me, but towards someone I care about. If it's a gross enough offense, I'll come out swinging. And once I'm in that mindset, I LOVE the rush. I love hitting, I love being hit, the thrill of not knowing what's going to happen next; all of it. I'm not much of an adrenaline junkie, but it's a tough rush to beat.

I despise violence, and avoid it at all costs. Luckily, I'm a pretty big guy, so have been able to intimidate people into avoiding fighting with me whenever things have gotten intense. I haven't been in a fight in about 15 years and hope I never will be again. I don't watch boxing, wrestling, mma or any of that stuff. But I do watch football and hockey, which can be pretty violent sports. But I don't like the fighting in hockey, either.

But I don't begrudge people that enjoy watching it or engaging in it. As long as both guys in a fight want to be there, go nuts. Just not my thing.

I consider myself a pacifist but a lot of it is out of self preservation. I'm not a big fan of pain (Unless it's tattooing). I'm also scrawny, out of shape and lacking in skills to the point that I would likely get my ass whooped (I do know a couple pressure points). So I don't go out searching for fights.

I've known people that have gotten so upset that their plan is to go out,....hit some bars, drink some beers and either start or get into a fight with some complete stranger (or acquaintance) looking for the same outlet. I get it,....but I have more constructive outlets for my frustration (as pointed out by Quiet Things) and don't really see any point to getting into fights. Just different ways of getting the same outcome I guess.

RE: Hockey Fights. There is a place for it in the sport,...and I won't get into the details or the enforcers code, but that is about the only violence I can tolerate (and actually enjoy).

Oh I know all about the details and enforcers. Still, meh. You can accomplish the same thing with a really hard check.

i think that i've gotten less able to stomach violence as i've gotten older. i think it's because as i've gone through life i've gotten hurt, and seen other people get hurt, so much that the effects are no longer an abstraction in the same way they once were, and known enough people of different types that people's pain is more personalized. for example, when i was younger photos of the Holocaust were photos of awful atrocities; now they're photos of the Nazis killing women who look like Aunt Doris from my ex-wife's family, you know? and that hilarious YouTube faceplant video reminds me of the time i ate pavement on my bicycle on Market Street.

in terms of me participating, i find the adrenaline rush creepy in the same way i found taking too much cocaine creepy...it's very compelling while it's happening, but afterwards i feel fucked up and somehow wrong, out-of-phase in a way i can't describe. i think that controlled sport violence is a good idea for people who are suited to it; i don't think someone with my temper is suited to it, because if i was put in a situation where i could let go i'd go medieval on someone's ass rules be damned.

I absolutely agree with your assessment, and I don't like it when a clean hit leads to a fight,...that's just poor sportsmanship.

I've seen some hockey fights result from two guys grinnin at each other and seemingly to say,...."Let's give these guys a show".

I will also say that at least for this past season's Flyers team,...their lack of a legitimate enforcer hurt their chances at being successful. Teams were allowed to get physical with the Flyers with no one to keep that in check, and it showed with how beat up the Flyers were by the time they reached the Conference Semis.

Do you change the channel when two hockey players drop the gloves? My biggest gripe with fighting in hockey is more often than not,...it's just a hug/jersey pulling fest.

As a means of conflict resolution I see violence as pointless. In the end what has been accomplished. You've gotten banged up or worse,...and you still hate the person you engaged with, but I guess realistically,....some people just need a good ass whoopin.
