Usually anything with none to only moderate aggression in it, so I can hang around with my sadness, buy her a drink and let her seduce me.

...but I prefer getting angry rather than depressed so I always take, eventually, a healthy dose :animal: of some aggressive old school death metal or something just as angry as I want to be. I find even som eold funeral doom metal bands like old Thergothon acceptable since it's still got enough of that AAAAaRRGGH in it to get me up and going.

As a side note: some artist just are too uplifting to let Your brooding angst make You a fool of Yourself. I strongly suggest, instead of medication by doctors orders:
the Stranglers
Iggy Pop and the Stooges
Motörhead
Hawkwind
the Cult

i love ravi shankar. the sitar is one of the coolest instruments i've ever heard.

but when i'm sad i usually go for some post rock, especially when i'm having a panic attack. brings me down to some extent. in high school, i listened to a TON of saves the day, and these days i usually just listen to something mellow to try and straighten out my thoughts. sigur ros is pretty good at that

That's right, Al--You lost. And let me tell you what you didn't win: a twenty volume set of the Encyclopedia International, a case of Turtle Wax, and a year's supply of Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco Treat. But that's not all. You also made yourself look like a jerk in front of millions of people. You brought shame and disgrace to your family name for generations to come. You don't get to come back tomorrow. You don't even get a lousy copy of our home game. You're a complete loser!

Yeah, that's true! The same goes for Zappa and some corners of Tenacious D, too (though the joke has got a little weary for me already). And Heyseed dixies, which again reminds me a bit of the Finnish polka band Eläkeläiset (transl. the Retireds). Which is, for me, the absolute cure for all ails. Or then it's the booze it makes me drink.

In Rainbows by Radiohead
( ) or the acoustic disc of Heim/Hvart by Sigur Ros
Oceanless by Landing
Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus
the first Seal album
Hejira by Joni Mitchell
Campfire Headphase by Boards of Canada

but if it's blacker than black, i'll always end up at Neil Young's Tonight's the Night.

see, i don't listen to the Smiths when i'm sad, because i find the Smiths utterly hilarious. Morrissey makes me ROFL like nobody else in popular music. between Moz and Belle and Sebastian i can be amused for weeks with that droll Northern shit.

I've also found that certain instrumental things can really lift my mood...not sure why, but particularly some of the kinda droning/hypnotic Eastern stuff..(and no, I'm not talking about in conjunction with recreational substances  )

Mohammed Reza Mortazavi, anyone? :excellent:

Too right. Smiths isn't purely sad music, but certainly you can listen to them while sulking. I'm pretty sure the major hobby of most Smiths fans is "sitting on a park bench and sighing".

However I have also laughed my ass off when listening to them sometimes.
