I'm Canadian too, and the fact is that a lot of people and companies view shipping up here as a way to make a few more bucks. There have been many times when I've spent a ridiculous amount for shipping, and then when the item shows up, the shipping label shows that it only cost about half what I paid to actually ship it. Very annoying.

It's actually a lot more money to send stuff to canada if you send it priority...you can go first class on the cheaps but there is no insurance/tracking there.
I've done first class to Canada a few times without a hitch, but the risk is there.
...but if you're offering to make up the difference and chip in for shipping

Or list it as "local pick-up only". That one usually gets me
. I can understand if the person is selling an amp, but come on... that's what Craigslist is for. But it would be funny to see how far people would drive for a cheap Klon.I've never shy'ed away from shipping internationally. Heck, I've shipped a PT-pro to Norway in a trade before. Now that was expensive! Luckily the guy was nice enough to split the shipping cost with me. I've done a few international trades in my day, and one thing I never could understand is how it usually takes at least twice as long for the other person to receive what I send than it does for me to receive what they'd sent. It always makes things a bit comfortable when I give them the positive news that I got my goods, and then a few days later they're like "um yeah, still haven't received anything."

I think it depends on how you work the system with your packaging / people and companies do overcharge quite often. You can easily spend $150 shipping stuff or get a different box rearrange stuff tetris style and pay $50. Shipping should be included somehow in purchase price and just be like 5 bucks extra standard if it's international.
yeah i pre asked them and they said they ship everything in a certain size box and they said dw it will all fit in no probs and it will come to 12 dollars then at the checkout charged me the full flat rate of 38 american then said when its shipped they will refund the rest. they sent it then changed there mind and said nah it cost 38 dollars sorry. if i knew i wouldnt of ordered from there OR added a bunch of stuff to it to get my moneys worth

I would never ever ever ever ever send something non-trackable. I guess that's just me being paranoid. It would freak me the fuck out

I think that has something to do with you guys never seem to get taxed for anything, so customs' job is just to make sure there's no drugs or bombs and then away it goes. No screwing around to calculate import taxes and duty.modernage wrote:...one thing I never could understand is how it usually takes at least twice as long for the other person to receive what I send than it does for me to receive what they'd sent.
I also get the feeling you probably have more places where stuff comes into the country -- Canada appears to have only two: Missasauga and Vancouver. If stuff lands in Vancouver, which is closer to me, I usually get it pretty quickly (but they're also more stringent about tax), if it lands in Missasauga, which is the other end of the country, it sits in customs for a week or more, then they truck (not fly!) it across the country, which takes at least another week.
It usually takes a month for stuff to get from the US to my door.
Oddly, stuff from Europe usually takes about 5 days door to door.
As for the non-trackable thing -- I've done that shipping to/from people I know and people with good reps, many times and no problems. I know one guy, a serious collector, who doesn't bother with insurance...and that's when shipping $10,000 worth of vintage pedals across the world.
OTOH, I used to live in England and the postman would just rob anything out of your mail that was worth anything. Took me 4 months and about a dozen goes to get a credit card as the postie kept stealing them.

I know, it's nuts. But at least 2 weeks of that is customs and general fuckabout time.maz91379 wrote:How is it that it takes like 5 days for a package to get to me australia on the other side of the planet yet a month to get to canada from the US?
