complete bullshit. i was sitting on my couch. no doorbell, no knock, and they did NOT leave notice.
packages are left on my doorstep or behind the bush next to the doorstep or once in a great while at the side door to my house.
Last time this happened to me, it gave me the option to redeliver with the option to leave a note. Just typed "leave it at my door, its fine" and boom. Is that an option for ya?

Last summer I sat right outside drinking some iced tea and a UPS truck passed by. Checked tracking. Fucker drove by with my package and punched in "failed delivery" literally 1 min after driving by.
I've been told by my carrier that sometimes they do that if it didn't make it on the truck or some other thing happened....They have to give a resolution to the system for the delivery day and if the carrier doesn't have it in hand, they will put that.
Most likely, the carrier (or floating day off carrier) never saw the package or was brought back to the office. The supervisor then put that into the computer to make it seem like they are on time.
Also, sometimes the office that ship it over to your satellite office is late and shows up after the carrier left, but it was still scanned and binned at the satellite.
Carriers are usually pretty good. There are some bad ones...Bit the problem I have found is at the sorting/house staff.

I don't think he'd deny this.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

Lately this happens to me with every other USPS delivery it seems like. No notice, no attempt, then about 7 or 8 pm tracking will update with an "attempt". I've been chalking it up to laziness or overworked drivers. Never used to happen to me living in a more upscale neighborhood. Never does any good calling to complain, they will just keep lying that an attempt was made, they know it's bullshit.
