I had DDTs on my G&L before I traded it, and they held D standard pretty well with the .105 set. They also sell a single 145 gauge high-tension string designed to tune below B (i'm thinking F#). I'm having a hard time resisting that one.

Light picks, heavy gauge strings, high action, raise the pickups to just below the strings on the top frets.
