Re: identify this fuzz tone!
Sounds like Neil Young's normal dirt sound, which is to say "who knows?". Could well just be a cranked tweed Deluxe/some other amp, could be that plus dirt pedals. Durham Electronics make the Crazy Horse which is intended to mimic his tone, but I've never tried one (crazy expensive to mimic someone else's sound!) so I dunno how well they actually manage it.
You might get there with something like a fuzz face/tonebender "vintage-y" fuzz with the gain turned down a bit.

yeah i saw that crazy horse pedal.. crazy price. this also sounds like the delay is being run after the fuzz.

Awesome! Let me know how it is, his tone is like my favourite sound evar but I can't justify the price and don't have the diy skillz to build one.

I have owned both the Durham Crazy Horse (as well as a clone of it), and it definitely will get you the tone in that clip.

Re: identify this fuzz tone!
Basically he ran his guitar into a voltage-starved tweed with some analog delay (an old MXR I think) and a spring reverb tank.
I was obsessed with that soundtrack too a couple years ago, and bought a Crazy Horse to mimic it. It's the most I've ever spent on a pedal but I haven't regretted it a moment since. I've had it for about 5 years now and it's still my favorite dirt pedal; it's not for everyone, though. It definitely gets the Dead Man sound, and it can actually do a lot more than that.

Re: identify this fuzz tone!
On the relatively cheaps, something with buckers > MXR Blue Box about 3:00-4:00 on the mix into an analog-voiced echo did it for me, amp either a Jazz Chorus or a Fender Deluxe, reverb set to just be 'on' barely.
I got closer with the Space Echo than with my other stuff but it wasn't hard to nail.

Re: identify this fuzz tone!
I do my Neil Young impersonations with an Algal Bloom, DOD Octoplus, Upper and these days a RRR. Works pretty well for me because I don't care about getting the exact sound but the feel, but I'm still looking forward to the review because it could be cool to have the Crazy Horse

I prefer the "Le Noise" area... and beleave it or not, I'm using an AB-Synth 5k for that sound.
SS/BS Hawk was near that sound too.

Re: identify this fuzz tone!
You guys have way more experience with it than I do (never tried any) but wouldn't the SS/BS Fuck OD or Mini get sounds in this ballpark as well (though it might net get as gainy)?
Great sound, love the Dead Man soundtrack and the film is cool too!
