The Doom Room: ILF Edition

question, probably for nick: last night i tried out a v4. it's been looked at by a competent tech. i actually got it from my tech's shop. he's done some work on it and is trying to help the owner sell it. he let me take it to practice to try it out. it was awesome. sounded really really good and was loud as shit. we played for an hourish, maybe a little less, then took a few minute break (i'm in a band with smokers). when we came back in and i walked up to the amp, i noticed that somewhat distinct smell of really hot electrical things. i played for a second. amp still sounded great, but when i put my hand on the faceplate, i noticed it was really hot, mostly over on the side with the power switches. seemed unusual, so i turned it off and switched to my jmp which i just got back from getting a retube and a couple of other odds and ends.

so what's up with that heat? seems like i shouldn't buy this one, right? that's not normal for a v4, right? what could it be? i guess it could be a lot of things, but it was weird and i stopped using it 'cause i really don't want to blow up an amp that's not mine.

Both of my Ampeg VT-40s(V2 in combo form) do this when I play them. It smells like hot eletrical things and they get warm as all hell but I've never had a problem with either. Freaked my out the first few times I cranked them though.

i must say, playing the jmp with new tubes after 6 months or more out of commission was like falling in love all over again. that amp is amazing.

did i mention that we're coming to your area? may 1st and second. the 1st is probably a day off and the 2nd we're playing in santa barabara. two of my bandmates are from santa barbara, so we'll probably head down there for the day off. you should come to the show if you can make it and we should have some beers. i don't actually know how far santa barbara is from you, it's all the same place down there to me. but if it's close it'd be good to hang out again.

Im pretty close to santa barbara myself and would be stoked to check out that show, might be able to convince a few more to come out as well...what band are you playing in?

SB show is at a venue called muddy waters with a band called sutratma, who are friends of my bandmates and they rule so hard. also a band called hesse, but i haven't heard them so i don't know anything about them. here's our music if you want to check it out. streaming or free download.

Oh awesome, just saw/met Sutratma last month and yeah they are pretty rad guys and fuck yes mountain show!! I have a feeling i'll be getting a call regarding my genny and vehicle any day now.

Just listened to part of the first song and fuck yes, this is perfect mountain music. Ill probably just go to the SLO show then to save money but ill definitely spread the word to my homies in SB.

This is great news, March was somewhat of a shitty whirlwind of shit winds, April seems to be turning out much more rad.

we're playing in oly on april 19th and there's a very slight chance that a tacoma show is going to happen on the 20th, but that's not looking very good at this point. i was trying for months to get something to work out in seattle or tacoma and it was impossible, which is weird since it's so close and i know so many people up there.

we're also playing a portland show on the 24th, but that's probably a bit far for you.

sweet. it was going to be at a venue called the northern, but i guess they just started getting noise complaints, so it's getting moved. venue is uncertain at this point but it's most likely the voyeur. not an ideal place, but my good friend who is setting up the show has a huge banging PA that he's going to bring 'cause their sound sucks and i think he's even planning on hanging huge black curtains to cover all the stupid shit on the walls. he's the man and he'll make it a good show so it should be pretty sweet. see you there.

I just checked the tour dates but I was in class so didn't get a chance to comment, I will most definitely be around those days and beers and shows sounds rad. SB is only about a half hour from me and I'm up there quite often so it's no mission by any means. I was also thinking about going to that mountain show in SLO too, actually, it sounds pretty radical! Also, since some guys you're with are from the SB area you'll probably have a place to stay but if you don't you all are more than welcome to crash at my place - I always have plenty of food and beer/liqour and I insist on buying merch so everyone's usually happy.

I think folks can/should play what you want, and I won't tell other folks what to do, but the only reasons I play what I play is because a) I got good deals on all of it and b) it's what I've arrived at after playing countless other setups and can finally make the sounds that I hear in my head. It's completely possible to get killer heavy tones out of just about any decent gear, and getting hung up on brands is, IMO, missing the point.

I agree, I think availability is also a massive factor. Im always broke and cant afford awesome gear, so I've got to make do with what I can find in my price range and either be adaptable or open to new sounds or find a way to get it close to what I'm hearing. And as per the previous discussion on room sizes and gear and styles, you definitely adjust your style to suit your gear, and its not all bad, especially if it moves you out of your comfort zone, I like that feeling too, that this isn't what you'd normally do, so now you've got to adapt.
This has inspired me to dig up my old Ibanez strat cheapy beater and get it happening. Have been wanting to get von Till on that thing for ages now.
Also lately I've discovered the joys of diming every fucking knob on my amp. I used to be a specific setting kinda guy, those days are over. I feel liberated.

I do actually care about 'the cool'. Not to get all philosophical about Strats and Doom, but there is definitely something to be said on being inspired by your instruments. If you subconsciously like to 'fit in' then a Gibson Les Paul or an SG is where you'll naturally curve towards, with maybe a Marshall JCM800. If you've relished in the Grungier side of music then you might gravitate towards a pale blue Telecaster and an Ampeg V4. And if you're naturally a little more flamboyant than your band mates then you might just pick up a white Flying V baritone and run a stack of Verellen. It's all very serious, but the conscious mind isn't always in control when choosing, buying and even playing gear. Sometimes you have to go with your gut. Our personality does play a part in what we use as musicians. I don't mean to be saying this like it's new to you, but it's an interesting topic.

What do your gear purchases say about you?

I'm more the flamboyant type i guess. When I first started playing guitar seriously in a band a few years ago I had no knowledge of the gear forums or anything and only went on what I knew would work for metal, an LP style guitar and a 5150. Then I sold the LP + 5150 to get a Reissue Model T and Gibby Flying V, then traded the Model T for an Orange AD200B and then I bought the VB2 and Annunaki. I've always been a little weird about gear, I've used bass amps for guitar for 15 years now because I always loved pedals and just wanted a clean loud amp with alot of low end. Back in the 90's no cheap guitar amps could provide that but the bass amps of the time got me a lot closer. So I've always deviated toward those types of amps (with the Annunaki being my ultimate version). As far as pedals I have no allegiance, I use what I think sounds good. Alot of people hate on digital effects but I have never played IMO a better sounding delay then the Timeline nor a better sounding verb then the Space. Here's the funny thing though, as much as I love boutique amps and pedals I'm not into insanely expensive guitars, out of my 3 main guitars I haven't paid over 500$ for any of them, and my basses were both around 350$. I've always been a guitar tweaker so to me the most important thing is the feel and playability. Since you can improve tone with new pickups / electronics / hardware you can make cheaper guitars sound like boutique gear. And when you build them out of parts and put no logos on them nobody in the crowd is any wiser, they just assume its a crazy boutique guitar. As far as super strats, hell yeah!!! Love me some fender types, as I play 2 telemasters and a telecaster. I'm thinking of picking up another 8 string later this year though as when I go to write my own music E standard just doesn't cut it for me (its more my playing style then the tuning) and the guitar I'm looking at (ibanez RG8, the most generic 8 string you can find [but also the ONLY inexpensive one with a fixed string through bridge ]) is 350$-400$ new, and after listening to some demo's I might not even swap the pickups.

I don't care about what is "in", I care about what feels and sounds good to me (and it must be stained wood ) but I do have to admit that I always watch videos of our shows / look at pics, because the visual element is a very serious element of a live show. No matter how much you want to refuse that fact its reality, not to us musicians as much as the general populace but its still valid. And its only helped me grow, I found out that LP's look TINY on my sasquatch frame, but strangely 25.5" scale offsets look correct and baritones look perfect (and also play perfect) for me.
