It can't really track the sub frequencies of a bass very well. It works from about the 10th fret up but the "sub" comes out as pulses because the frequency is to low to divide. Noise makers would probably love it. We are working on some bass centered effects though.

...so, I'd be thrilled if I was proven wrong, but according to my earlier experience with octave down fx - not this one - and the quoted answer to my question, it might not be Your choise for synth bass if You wanted it to actually track the bass notes..
...BUT perhaps You're looking for gnarly squarewave synth sound with a warbly glitch low end noise...

One has to remember also that only a very few bass octavers either can track notes below A, and getting slightly glitchy with the tracking sometimes juts adds to the charm

Sounds really cool, and like a completely different beast than the Subdecay Octasynth. It seems like with the BIt Commander you get lots of control over the octaves and the Octasynth gives you more control over the (resonant) filter. Very cool Jamie!

They are both phantasmagorically great--it's amazing that two such devices, so similar, and yet so individual, have come out in such a short space (shades of the Subdecay Quasar DLX and Empress Phaser). This is no mere human conspiracy; it has to be directed by an outside intelligence hellbent on humanity's destruction. There truly is no relief for the meme GAS: it will consume this rock we call home. [Needs octopus skull emoticon.]

my mxr bass octave tracks to around low G to F#.... I will at least take my chances and see how it is. You can just run a really bright tone on the bridge pickup and the harmonics should hang on for tracking. If it can go down to a low D in standard, I'd be fine.

Yeah, I would guess that to be the case. From the EQD site:

Bit Commander Guitar Synthesizer
The Bit Commander is a monophonic analog guitar synthesizer with four octaves of vintage square wave synth tones. It’s no-nonsense interface makes it easy to add or subtract octaves to create a wide variety of sounds without having to dial in envelopes or oscillators. Ripping sub-octave thump, pulsing octave down, a lightly squared base tone and a swelling transformer based octave up all join together to make a single guitar sound like an army of olde tyme synths.

Like all analog octave effects, there are some basic rules to follow that will get you the most enjoyment from your Bit Commander. Use the neck pickup and play single notes. The best tracking occurs from the 7th fret up on all the strings. Below the 7th will still track but there will be occasional glitches and stutters. The lower the note, the harder it is for the Bit Commander to register. The use of Bass and lower registers on keyboards will yield unexpected, sometimes pleasing, sometimes disgusting results. These are not mistakes or flaws, it is the nature of analog octaves.

No custom that I'm aware of, but there are usually one or two color schemes made eventually, some in limited batches.
