EQD vs. My V4

Post by MaggotBrainNY »

If I were a V4, that loves to be cranked, but maybe sometimes needs to be tipped over the edge a bit more (for metal/hardcore/doom, combined with 50w JMP), what EQD overdrive would I like to have plugged into me?

White Light? Monarch? Chrysallis? Hoof? One of these super secret new devices you've got cooking ;) ?

Anyone using a similar setup?

Love to hear some thoughts. I have a RAT that I've been trying, but it's really not doing it for me with this particular amp.

I've got a v4 and each of these pedals except the chrysalis. The monarch is the most grindy, interesting combo to me, probably the most versatile for eq'ing in something sludgy or just boostng the v4 goods. The hoof is much smoother, and the white light is a bit brighter and can get a clear angular sound...i think the white light would be the closest sounding to the rat, if that helps.

There is a V4 on my local craigslist for cheap. This is not helping my Ampeg or Monarch gas...

Can't speak to the hardcore side of things, but my V4B + Hoof = massive impending doom. Finding the right spot in the tone sweep makes that thing slay. I've other muffs and variants that sound good, but I just keep coming back to the Hoof--it manages to strike a great balance of dirt, swept midrange muscle, and clarity.
That being said, next on my list is the Monarch...

Now that I've had more time to rock the monarch...I can tell you harpies' description is dead-nuts on. While the Hoof might be fantastic for deep smooth sludge, the Monarch is BRILLIANT for snarl and raunch, and is very flexible to allow you to dial in as much or as little rawk as you want. It's very easy to use and to get a great sound out of my V4B...the sensitivity switch on the V4s will make it even easier to knock the gain up or down a notch.

^thanks! I definitely think Jamie nailed that early Orange/Matamp grindy sound, yet the pedal has more versatility than I could get out of the AD-15/ad-30 amps...never got a chance to give a good go at any of the early amps, but I've heard enough of em to know the Monarch is great at getting that sound and more.

The Monarch rules, just picked one up a couple weeks ago. Above descriptions are right on. I'm loving lots of the lower gain settings too, super versatile OD. Also adds a dark, menacing boost to my fuzz pedals, like nothing I've laid ears on, as far as OD goes.

Should be noted, I usually hate OD. The Monarch and the Fuck are putting an end to that hate.

Absolutely, it CRUSHES when in line after my Pharaoh...instant head bows and devil horns from my bandmates whenever they're both on.
Schnikes, are you using it before or after your fuzz boxes?

Actually using it first in line currently. Haven't experimented with it much though, sounded so good I just left it there...

Sounds good after fuzz too? May have to do some rearranging, check that shit out!

Same here; it just happened to be easier to plug in after, so that's where it went, and sounded so f*cking good, I didn't even try it in front...
