Tone Reaper, now bought but have questions

I recently got an EQD Hoof and love it. I've also discovered their Tone Reaper and I like what I hear, I previously had a germanium tone bender Mk III clone and thought it's eq was limited, it wasn't bright enough for me - the Tone Reaper seems to have more versatility. I have some cash from some recent pedal trades and just wanted to know people's thoughts on this pedal.

I'm in the same situation. I've been using a Hoof (on bass) for about a year now and have been very tempted to pick up a Tone Reaper myself. The Hoof is so badass I can only imagine the Reaper would be a worthy compliment. From the demos that I've checked out, the Reaper seems to be, IMO, slightly less compressed and lower gain than the Hoof. I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone who's used both chimes in with their opinions.

I know EQD make a dual pedal with a Hoof and Tone Reaper so i'm assuming the individual pedals will go well together.

Sell the Hoof, get a Hoof Reaper. It's super worth it. Prymaxe has some in stock still I think. The extra octave feature is really great, and the TR + H do for sure stack really well together. I bet a Sound Shank would stack pretty good with a Hoof too if you wanted to go that route.

It's not so worth it, in monetary terms, if you live in the UK like I do. US price plus shipping and the chance it'll get caught at customs and be slapped with 20% tax puts me off. I'm pretty sure no UK retailers have them. But thanks for the suggestion, i'd looked at them and I agree they do look and sound pretty sweet.

This is the route I took recently. The Hoof Reaper is awesome, the octave option is indeed a nice bonus! The two go well together because they're entirely different, sonically speaking. The Tone Reaper is much brighter with a raw, edgy sound as opposed to the overall low end smoothness of the Hoof.

Still pretty new but so far, I prefer the Hoof. I'm really liking the Reaper as well, just takes some getting used to. Couldn't pass up gettin' both together, combo saves me a power out to boot.

I've got a question for anyone who's used this pedal for a while. I recently purchased a used one and I've noticed it has kind of a nasty gating effect when the input drops below a certain level. Or if you just kind of graze the string instead of hitting it cleanly. Rolling down the volume of the guitar really accentuates this. I'm trying to figure out whether it is supposed to be like this, or whether there's something wrong with the pedal. I've emailed Earthquaker about but no response so far. I'd be fine with sending it back to get it repaired - I just don't know if there's anything wrong or if this is the standard behavior.

I love every EQD fuzz I have tried. Hell yes, you need a Tone Reaper.

Gating with lower input is pretty standard on a lot of fuzzes I'd say. Haven't tested this with the TR specifically, but it wouldn't surprise me.

The Hoof doesn't do this. I queried the tech from Tone Factor, where I got the Hoof, and he said he hasn't noticed anything like that Like I said, it's not a full cutoff, it's like it can't make up its mind so it kind of sputters. Not sure what's up because I still have heard back from EQD yet. If that's standard behavior, I'll probably just unload it since that's a feature I just don't care for.

That's the problem with buying something like this used. I can appreciate that a smaller builder probably has to concentrate on production first rather than support, since that's generating the income to keep the lights on. It's just kind of a drag when you are the one with the issue. The Hoof is OK, but I preferred the overall sound of the Reaper(other than the gating), so given my experience with the Reaper I may go ahead and return the Hoof for something else. Or just keep it, put an EQ after it and see how that works out. It's probably close enough. Haven't quite decided yet.

I now have a Tone Reaper, so I have changed the title of the thread. It sounds great, a really nice thick fuzz sound. However after getting it home I realised that it doesn't like the Korg DT10 tuner I have in my effects chain. I guess it's the buffer as when I remove it from the chain the issue goes away, any idea how to rectify this or an I just going to have to live with it? To be honest it's not such an issue if I do. Would it work/sound ok with a buffer after the Tone Reaper in the chain? Compared to my Hoof and other pedals it sounds a bit dark, I was thinking about putting an EQ after it to brighten it up a touch.

Tonebenders traditionally don't like being fed a buffered signal.
You could try the tuner later in the chain

Why not upgrade the tuner instead of running an eq?
I know it might sound like a waste of money when you could be buying more fuzz, I used whatever cheapo tuners I found laying around for years
...but the turbo tuner is now one of my favorite pedals. It tunes. Fast.

Yeah, my DT-10 was messing up my fuzz and oscillashuns too. Sold it and got a Pitchblack, which is true bypass.

I think i'm going to try running the tuner at the end of my chain, hopefully that'll sort it. I'm reluctant to throw more money at the problem to try and sort it so will only buy a new tuner as a last resort. As an alternative to buying an EQ i'm going to try using the boost function on my Boss FZ2 with the volume down as an EQ (after the reaper) as it has treble and bass controls, hopefully that'll give me a bit more brightness.

Tonebenders like to be immediately after a guitar. Even a true bypass pedal could cause problems. Move the TR first in line and that should solve your problems.

As for the EQ thing, what does the rest of your signal chain look like? Specifically what kind of pickups are you using?
