Transmitter or Hoof?
I resurrected my Black Keys CDs and am now interested in dialing up some fuzz tones, as oppposed to lighter distortion from my Fulltone OCD.
I have a Fralins in my strat and a 70s LP deluxe and two Hamers with full humbuckers. I have a Gibson GA-6 (think fender tweed deluxe) and a Dr Z Carmen Ghia combo. I would be using the Earthquakers with the Z.
Have seen a lot of demos for the Transmitter and the Hoof. I was favoring the Hoof til I saw the Transmitter has a bias pot. I think that would help dial in the tones matched to the pickups.
So, any thoughts on one over the other, aiminmg for heavier fuzz tones a'la Black Keys. what am I giving up if I go with the Transmitter?
thanks

Re: Transmitter or Hoof?
I would recommend the Dirt Transmitter. Dans sound is primarily from cranking the amps then hitting them with fuzz. Creates kind of a "broken amp" sound. The dirt transmitter has a very similar sound when you dime the fuzz, roll back the tone to about 1-2 O'clock and set the bias at noon.
Here is a video of Dan using the dirt transmitter (...for the loud parts)

Thanks, Jamie (I guess you are Jamie). It sounds like the Transmitter (with the Bias knob) might get me there.
I have seen web demos with many different colored cases. Seems like the current version is green, as posted at the EQD website? Is that how you distinguish between versions?

Re: Transmitter or Hoof?
Dan Auerbach has used both pedals. His main live fuzz is usually a green russian bmp...which is basically what the hoof is. I think during the brothers tour he's been using the green bmp and a shin ei fuzz wah. I know he's really into the Standard Fuzz by ibanez as well. The Big Come Up was an ampeg and a maestro mfz mostly. Thickfreakness was a fulltone souldbender i think. The other albums are any bodys guess.
Jamie is right...his amps are always maxed out and part of his fuzz sound is pushing those already maxed amps. I've been getting good results stacking the dirt transmitter in front of the hoof. It reminds me of the sound on the album version of Till I Get My Way.
I say buy both...can't go wrong with either of them though.
Jamie if you ever make another dual fuzz... I think a dt and hoof combo would be amazing.

You really can't go wrong with buying both. They are great pedals, but trust Jamie's experience on this one...he did tech for Dan, so you can't really get more knowlegeable than that.
also, even the 3 knob DT pedals have a bias, it is just a trimmer on the inside instead of the outside, but it is probably worth your while to get the 4 knobber for regular knob fiddling.

I've got both...the DT strikes me as being an easier to dial in an instant keys tone, kinda like that exploding amp tone jamie described.
There are some that call me...morningstaru?

Tried this setting out last night (put the tone @ 3 o'clock) going into my fairly cranked JMP.... very much THAT sound. My amp went into melt-down, speaker explosion mode, with a nice "tear" on the topend. Very compressed, with a massive lowend. Guys in my band loved it.
Love this pedal more and more everytime I turn it on.
Your days of plenty are numbered.

A while ago you sent me a song from your band and I forgot to tell you it was awesome.

Out of these two what would you recommend for bass? I love the bias knob on the DT but the hoof seems to have more of a full sound.

Prob the hoof. Most big muff style pedals are made to match well with bass...not saying the DTransmitter couldn't hold up, I've nvr used one.
I just realized EQD has more than one "DT" pedal

Haha whoops my bad. Yeah that's what I'm starting to think. I think I may have been infatuated with the Dirt Transmitter because of the bias knob more than the sound. I want a nice full fuzz as well as a gated one, thought I could kill 2 birds with one stone.

Damn it watching more videos makes me undecided again
I have to try these out in person for sure.
