hi guys, i'm looking for a fuzz to complement my green russian muff, and i'm considering both the dream crusher and the tone reaper. which would be better in terms of covering all the bases, so to speak?
Well, I have a Dream Crusher and a Tone Reaper currently, but have never had a Russian muff of any variety, but as far as I've heard, they are known for having a bigger bottom end than the other muffs (I had a Triangle Muff clone for a while).
The Dream Crusher is a really heavy germanium fuzz based on a Fuzz Face. You get some of the classic fuzz face sounds up until about 2 oclock on the fuzz knob, and then the magic starts to happen. It gets really heavy and bassy from 2 oclock onwards. It can get in the ballpark of Soda Meiser tones with the gain cranked, if that means anything to you.
I would say for varieties sake to get a Tone Reaper and here's why: the tone knob! You can get some great trebly, raspy fuzz out of it, or some darker, smoother tones. I currently have the small box reaper; I traded away a big box but missed it too much!
You really can't go wrong with either, but if I had to choose, I would take the Tone Reaper.
Yep...I've got a reaper/crusher as well, and I think the reaper will probably give you a bit more variety.
The crusher is amazing, especially the :ahem: crushing lowend...but with the higher gain ranges you may see some overlap in application with your russian with that big bottom sound. I'm not suggeting the crusher sounds like a russian, just the reaper can get more un-russian fuzz
i agree with the choice of the tone reaper of your two chosen devices, but as a suggestion - you may want to check out the dirt transmitter. it's a wonderful option if your'e looking for a super versatile fuzz. hands down amazing tone, like all other earthquaker fuzz boxes. tweaking the bias and tone knobs can get you just about any sound you could want from a fuzz pedal, and the fuzz dial will take you from a brilliant overdrive to an all out fuzz assault.
Dream Crusher is a great high-gain fuzz face-type fuzz. I wasn't overly impressed with the Tone Reaper -- played lots of other TBMkIIIs that did it more for me. YMMV but I'd go for the Dream Crusher
Good deals done with all these guys Canada, we put the "u" in satire

Not to get too off topic, but are any of them in the same price range?
Skinpimp MkIII kills and can be had for around $200ish. The Fulltone Soulbender is actually pretty good and I got mine for $150, but that was a while ago. Isn't the Yardbox a MkIII? I hear it's good but haven't tried it yet.
(I should say that I got the Tone Reaper while I was waiting for my DAM Fuzz Sound, so it didn't really stand a chance once the big blue box showed up. Now't wrong with it. But I really liked the Dream Crusher.)

Like big velcro exploding fuzz tones?
Oh my bad, I meant the Dream Crusher max gain sounds like the SM with the gain at about 9. Which is super heavy...
