Massive concept albums

Post by casecandy »

I love enormous albums with tons of songs and multiple discs, glued together by a tight concept. For example...

- The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs (69 songs, 3xCD)
- The Early November's The Mother, The Mechanic, and the Path (47 songs, 3xCD)
- Any number of other song-a-day/week/month projects, including those by Jens Lekman, Jonathan Coulton, Sleeping At Last, and Meridian... especially Sleeping At Last's Atlas: Year One (36 songs, 6xCD)
- Titus Andronicus's The Most Lamentable Tragedy (29 songs, 2xCD)
- Say Anything's In Defense Of The Genre (27 songs, 2xCD)
- Thrice's The Alchemy Index, Vols. I-IV (24 songs, 4xCD)

Got any others for me? :yay:

Ha! Canadian blasphemy: never listened to this!

FYI to people recommending, I'm familiar with all Who and Floyd albums that fit the bill.

YES.

How explicit do you want your concept albums, cc? I figure you already know Deltron 3030, so does something like that qualify? Or are you actually just looking for like massive slabs of Proggy Cape Wearing Nerditry?

Not super long, but Mt Eerie by The Microphones is one of my all-time favourites:

Lol, I think the Dear Hunter and Coheed & Cambria win in this regard, seeing as they have concept discographies.

And I know they are not liked around here, but no discussion on concept disks is complete without at least a mention of Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory by Dream Theater.

But if I had to pick a favorite concept album, I would go with Ziltoid the Omniscient by Devin Townsend, so good. :snax:

Not to derail, but I don't understand concept albums. Isn't every album a concept album?

No trolling here. Legitimately don't get it.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

I thought about them! I file both under "Appreciate Their Musicianship But Never Got Into Them."
But if I had to pick a favorite concept album, I would go with Ziltoid the Omniscient by Devin Townsend, so good.
Have listened to this in its entirety and it left me a little underwhelmed. Unpopular opinion, I don't really get Devin Townsend. More Canadian blasphemy for you.

Noice. I've always loved this album.

I do know Deltron 3030! And love them. It doesn't need to be prog or anything of the sort. Actually if you notice... none of the examples I gave are. *looks around nervously* PROG ISN'T REALLY MY THING *runs away*

Agreed. Perhaps it's more intentional than a pop-music/one-hit/single whore. I feel like Brian Eno, Peter Murphy, No Age, Boredoms, RATM put out concept albums whereas K-pop etc not so much.
