Drunk Driving

Post by SPACERITUAL »

Last night I drove myself home absolutely plastered drunk. This wasn't just shooting across town either, I'm talking probably 50 miles of highway down steep grade with turns that are somewhat daunting when you're sober. I have no idea how I made it home without killing myself or anyone else but I feel like an absolute piece of shit.

My plan was to use an uber to get home but quickly discovered that I was far too drunk to understand the app. This is a big fucking problem. If I can't even do the right thing when I recognize the need, then I think I need to get some help dealing with this.

Does anybody know of any good alcohol counseling that doesn't work like AA? I don't want to completely cut it out of my life but I need to learn how to set boundaries and stick to them..

Dude I know this feeling—I still can't believe I made it out of all the years I drove around piss drunk without getting into an accident or getting arrested.

I quit without AA—it wasn't really something that appealed to me—but I did totally quit vs. scale down, because that's just what I particularly had to do. My advice would be to find either a friend or friends you can really count on, and hang out with them while you're adjusting. Either that or I'd consider getting a therapist, maybe one who specializes in substance issues, to talk it out and find a plan that works best for you.

But yep—give it a shot, and see if rolling back is something you can do. Feel free to PM me some questions if you ever need anything. Good luck, man—and please be careful!

You don't need AA you need the foresight to sign up for uber before you go out drinking.

I'm not sure how it works in the states but from when I was in substance intervention it seemed like most of the ready to go options for people were based on the 12 step model.
I have a problem with it that stems from both personal and professional points of view but at the end of the day it works for some.

Are you able to book yourself into a counsellor? One to one is usually a good place to start and give you some strategies about recognising the when and what (causes you to drink that much) about your drinking habits and safeguards you can put in place to stop that shit.

And for fucks sake don't do that shit again.
You don't need me to tell you that but it's not just the risk to others, it's the risk to yourself.
I know when you're newt ass drunk the right call isn't always apparent (particularly in blackout mode), but try and make a decision and get organised before you get to that point.

Been needing a new sig :thumb:

But yes, Space—I agree with Pope that if you feel the need to seek some counseling on it, you should go check it out.

I am not in recovery, but one of my friends who is - and who really, really needed it - goes to Smart Recovery. They are not related to AA and can be used in conjunction with it or on their own. She has done both and fucking hated AA, but is currently doing very well with Smart. It's somewhat limited in region though and I can't remember where you're from.

This is a very impressive collection of Roto Toms. That's 21 Roto Toms in all. That is only $33.00 a Roto Tom.

Reliance on others is for the weak, particularly when dealing with chemical reactions through sustained and habitual contact and reinforcement. That's like the last line of the preamble to the Constitution, I think.

I did that back in college one time. Felt like a total asshole the next day (and for weeks after). That event totally changed how I viewed drunk driving and since then (longer ago than I would like to admit), it has not happened again.

I think maybe the shock and gravity of what you have done can be enough make sure you don't do it again. Count your lucky stars that you (and everyone else on the road) came out unharmed. Learn from this and move forward.

Out of every "defeat" there is an opportunity to better yourself. This is definitely one of those times.
