EMG passive bass pickups! Fitted and fucking awesome!

Post by KaosCill8r »

Just pulled the trigger on a set of EMG GZR PJ HZ Geezer Butler Precision/Jazz Bass Passive Pickups. I don't know what they are like. Got them because well Geezer Butler. They are supposed to nail his early 70s bass tone, which I love. They are a solderless design which I'm a bit dubious about.
EMG have always been known for active pickups as far as I know. Anyone out there in doom land had experience with EMG passive pickups in guitars or bass guitars? What did you think of them?

I didn't like them in any of the guitars I've heard, but I'm not a bassist so :idk: May not be for everybody, but I think everything has a potentially useful sound.
Good Deal List: bearbeams, pena_55, sonidero, greyscales, ChetMagongalo, xchristophex, Monkey Boy, krautrocker, osbornkt

I was thinking of dropping those in a bass I have, so I am very interested in this topic.

My opinion at the moment is they will definately be better than what is in there now. The bass in question is a Squier VM Jaguar with crappy pickups and an even crappier active bass boost curcuit. And I agree everything has a useful sound. That's how I feel about overdrive and fuzz pedals in general.

When I get them and fit them, which probably won't be for about 2 weeks I'll report back with what I think about them. What bass are you thinking of dropping them in?

Just a random ass Epiphone I got lying around. They have some kind of active EMGs right now, but I just don't jive with active pickups, especially ones that have so much fucking treble.

If the guitar versions are anything to go by, they'll certainly be murkier sounding.

I'm guessing murkier on a bass will be a good thing. Especially if you play through od or fuzz :idk:

There is an 88 pg thread over on Talk Bass about them that I've browsed through. The general consensus there is that they are awesome. A few of the clips posted there comparing them to other vintage voiced P bass pickups sound great too. Nice pronounced mids but also a very balanced tone all round. Nice smooth bass tone with the tone rolled off without getting muddy. The opinion there also is they sound great on their own but even better in a band mix. I take their opinions with a grain of salt though. :idk: I will see how good they are when I get them though.

I don't mind actives also. My other bass is a Washburn active 5 string. I love how it feels and sounds so I don't want to mod it. It is more the pain in the arse factor of buying batteries. Everytime I go to use it it seems the battery is flat. I live in the country, don't own a car and only get to go into town once a fortnight. Wish there was some other way. Can't seem to find rechargeable 9 v batteries. :idk:

The good news is the pickup kit has arrived in Melbourne Australia so they should be here in the next few days. The bad news is the other items I need are still sitting in Chicago and haven't moved since Friday. Hopefully that is just USPS tracking being a dick.
