Doom recs: more like Samothrace, Usnea?
Looking for some doom with long, intricate melodic lines, but without funeral doom keyboards. Stuff like this:

Uhhhh, Thou, Ufomammut, Pallbearer, Cough may scratch your itch.

Re: Doom recs: more like Samothrace, Usnea?
Some good music here (I've been a Pallbearer fan for a while), but none of it is quite what I'm looking for, though I think maybe Thou comes closest (after listening to a couple more songs from that record). I'm struggling to articulate what it is that I find musically compelling about my two examples that I'm not hearing in these other bands. Some of it is pacing: slower tempos, but also more of a feeling of space within those tempos - contrast with Thou, whose drummer is way too busy for my tastes. Some of it is tone: both Usnea and Samothrace tend toward cleaner tones, or distorted tones that are more on the "distortion" end of the spectrum rather than the "fuzz" end. Some of it is arrangement: there's more of a tendency toward a "lead" guitar voice rather than just riffs doubling the bass an octave above. Does any of this make sense to people who aren't me?

I think I understand. But tricky to find all those characteristics in one place.

It surely is. When the research librarian starts asking for help, that says something about the scope of the problem.pelliott wrote:I think I understand. But tricky to find all those characteristics in one place.

i think i smell what you're stepping in here. do you know asunder? i really think they might be up your alley. also, mournful congregation. if these bands are along the lines of what you seek, then i may have more recommendations. or you might already know these bands and it's not what you're looking for, but it's worth a shot.
the sound is kind of quiet and shitty on these uploads, but the recordings are actually quite good in real life. turn this up.

Not even being a fanboy - this seems pretty close to what you're looking for. Maybe slower than your original examples. But I think that right around 21:00 fits what you're looking for pretty perfectly (in case you don't have time to listen to the whole thing, 'cause it starts off pretty slow)
Here's side A of their last record:

Plus it's got the singer from Bloody Panda on it at the end. Bloody Panda is awesome.

Yeah. Awesome band. Sick Ibanez 6 string the dude plays. Definitely looking forward to the next album.skullservant wrote:Bell Witch
If that Ocean youtube catches your fancy you might want to look into Buried At Sea, definitely underrated in the grand scheme of things. Also maybe Stumm from Finland and Wijlen Wij from Belgium.

I don't think Buried At Sea can be underrated, because everyone that knows about them loves them.

certainly worth noting, as the dude was the bass player in samothrace for years. i'm not sure, but i don't think he's in samothrace anymore. incredible musician.skullservant wrote:Bell Witch

AFAIK, he's still in Samothrace. I have the Bell Witch album, and like it well enough, but it doesn't light me up the way the Samothrace records do.misterstomach wrote:certainly worth noting, as the dude was the bass player in samothrace for years. i'm not sure, but i don't think he's in samothrace anymore. incredible musician.skullservant wrote:Bell Witch
