Multivitamin Advice?

Post by aeonrevolution »

So, I grabbed some Centrum Mens vitamins because they looked fine. I'm not a big health nut, but I did cut out fast food and soda. I'm fairly active and skinny. No health problems.

I'm sittin here and I'm bored, though, and it seems these Centrum reviews say they suck balls and I'm just pissing my money away on them (literally). :snax:

Then....I proceeded to try seeing what might be a better buy and I stumbled into a confusing world that, quite honestly, I don't feel like learning about. This is a pretty boring subject IMO.

So, thought I'd ask here if someone who was in the know with wtf these little tablets/capsules are about and could recommend a decent multi. Preferably not one that costs like $100 a month and you have to take 5-7 tablets a day.

Thanks in advance duders.

I'm certainly not a scientist (or even a chem major), but one of my friends who is, is convinced that we don't absorb enough of the vitamins in the tablets for them to be worth any money. AFAIC, I'll eat a balanced diet and take the ones I have anyway. They can't hurt, and I'll at least get what I need through my diet. :idk:

Yeah I skimmed over a part where ppl were saying to find capsules instead of tablets bc we don't even absorb most of what's in a tablet

"more than a multiple" is the only multivitamin i've ever taken where I've actually noticed a difference in how I feel.
i was getting alot of headaches at work at the time i started taking them. headaches went right away, overall feeling of more healthiness.

they tell u to take 3 a day, but I only took one a day. i like how the DV % were much lower, but they offer a wider variety of stuff, even like natural stuff like vegetable, bee, and shark complexes and its on an 8hr time release so your not getting it all in a much shorter time span, but little pieces throughout the day.

haven't had one in awhile, but every now and then i'll pop one these days.
they also turn your piss neon, but like i said, only vitamin i've ever taken where i could actually feel a difference.

Honestly, most of the actual studies I'm aware of, as well as the awesome guys over at sciencebasedmedicine.org, have all said that most people really don't need to take supplemental vitamins, unless they are malnourished from a screwed up diet, or they have specific health issues that require supplementation.

The only supplement I frequently take:

Vitamins are a complex subject.

Ideally you'd want food-based vitamins as they're more easily absorbed by the body. So, instead of getting 'em from a supplement, just eat lots of vitamin rich food.

Tablets are compressed, and they have binders. If you eat a big tablet, it might pass through your system without being fully digested - a waste of money. A tiny Centrum tablet, maybe won't have that problem, I don't know. Capsules are gelatin containers that dissolve right away. That is pretty certain.

I would say don't worry about it too much. Finish your bottle of Centrum, and if you want capsules next time, they aren't too hard to find. You probably don't need a fancy high-end multivitamin, but who knows. Get one without iron if you're a dude.

ON Opti Men.

On the subject of whether vitamins actually do anything, I have only seen noticeable effects from taking vitamins during periods of extremely intense training, as when I was boxing and trained at high intensity for 3-5 hours per day 6 days per week. (During this time I was taking Universal Animal Paks, but they are overkill if you are doing anything less than competitive sports or bodybuilding training).

I take vitamins during any kind of training though, because having seen that they did have an effect at high levels of training, I think that they probably are still having an effect but that it is just less noticeable. That all being said, for the price and what you get in them, ON Opti Men seems to be one of the more solid choices.

On a more specific subject, supplementation of vitamin c has been shown to improve recovery time. The fastest recovery time coincided with about 500 mg of vitamin c daily. More than that was shown to begin to reverse the benefits - increasing recovery time.

Or get one with some if you're anemic, like me. I know a lot more girls who are anemic than guys though. :poke:

Eat a vriety of foods and make sure some veggies and fish are in the mix and you will be covered. If you eat the same thing every day then you might want to look into it.

Right on guys. My diet isn't horrible, but I don't eat a lot of vegetables. I don't dislike them, I just never seem to have any.

I'm gonna check out that American Health one. A lot of the ones like that seemed ridiculously expensive, like $100+ per month.

I've been taking an assortment of vitamins for years. For the last few months, I have not been taking them. I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I call bullshit! Like stated above, healthy diet and your good to go :thumb:

I have a healthy diet and my blood work is always aces. My MD still told me to take a daily multi. I run with it. I got the most reasonably priced vegetarian multiple that was in my local hippie foods store. I think I feel better when I take it than the days I forget to.
