I posted something in the doom room thread but I figured I would post something here too. This should be a link to my facebook album of the amp: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 2aad96dcb9. But for a quick look:
I have always wanted an orange but I don't really like the new oranges all that much as I liked the old school tones that you heard in a lot of bands like Sleep. So I figured I would put together my own and decided to do most of it from scratch. I built the head shell, drilled the chassis, did the layout, all the soldering etc.
It is basically a matamp gt100 and orange gro 100 combined with a few component changes or additions including a vox style high cut instead of a normal marshall style presence control (I never really liked those marshall style controls anyway.) It has a bigger FAC range ala Dunwich amps and a post phase inverter master volume. I still need to put it through its full paces at the practice space, but besides that it has sounded great at the volume levels I can get away with in my apartment.

Amazing. I've always wanted to do this but I worry that I'd just fuck it up and as tough as building one seems, trouble shooting issues seems far worse. I've got to say that I love the giant Matamp knobs but I think there might be too many of them, a too much of a good thing aesthetically like a woman with 6 breasts
Awesome. I'm glad you guys like it. I will try and get some sound clips as soon as possible. I can't really crank it at home since I live in an apartment but once I get it to the practice space it will be put through its paces. And yeah the biggest problem will be debugging anything that I may run into. That will get better with time. And six knobs may be too many but they are actually kinda simple in their functions and slightly overlap. The first knob is "deep" which is a 12 way FAC for regulating the bass. It is right after the input. The input jacks go right to the switch. This is one of those things that changes through the matamp and orange design. Some fac switches are first, some come after the volume but before the tone stack while others come after the tone stack. I decided to put it first since I had read it had its most dramatic effect there. And it does have a dramatic effect with the range of caps I put in there. The 12th spot is just a wire which effectively bypasses the switch but otherwise it has a range of caps from .22uf to 100pf I think, I have it written down somewhere. So a very high amount of bass cut, that can get razor thin. Kinda of a cool tone and will be an interesting addition for recording.
The second knob is the preamp volume labeled "fuzz." Then a baxandall tone stack with treble and bass. The fifth knob is the "presence" knob which I mentioned is a vox style hi cut which removes some of the treble vey late in the circuit. Then finally a post phase inverter master volume. When you get down to it there are two knobs for volume, two for bass and two for treble. Not too complicated and still allows a good degree of control.
Thanks on the face plate. I took the style of the orange/matamp basically and did it in adobe illustrator. Logos is kinda a joke for myself since it is making fun of having a giant logo but it is also greek for logic which I use in a semi-formal name for the stuff I do under the name Mythos Over Logos. Myth over Logic. Kinda lame but i think it is a funny jab. I figure if I ever actually ever get around to selling stuff I might do it under that name.
I made a quick video last night on the flip cam I have but when I tried to upload it to youtube the audio during the guitar playing was clipping even though the master volume was at 1 or 2. Probably had more to do with the youtube upload rather then the actual video though. So I will probably just wait till I can take it to the practice space where I can crank it and have the nice recording set up in place.
I just meant too many "big" knobs. Most Mat's mix the large and medium knobs together. I like the big ones and I've always wanted to do an amp that just had one super, giant knob or a throttle like a jet that functioned like the volume knob.

Ah, I see. I just wanted a little more uniform look but liked the big knobs. Some oranges I have seen have had weird big/little combos though. Like the Bass knob big but the treble and presence knob small.

Nooooooo! I swear it works! I guess this is the downside of having almost everything at the practice space. I took my mics to the space and I don't have a spare here. I should just pick up a sm57 to leave here at the apartment.
