Looking For: Doomy tube bass amp around 1k

Post by ridingeternity »

Figured i'd check here for suggestions on what I should be on the watch for/if anyone here has anything they don't use they may want to convert into some fundage for their main rig.

My bassist is finally fed up with the 1001RB and really was digging the Red Bear tone, however I think he would need more than just that to fill out the low end.

I've got a Peavey VB-2 w/ JJ power tubes and a touring hard case I *might* be interested in letting go. It's loud as balls (225w 6xEL34) and can easily double as a guitar amp (that's what I used it for).

Although, I don't know if that will keep up with your rig.

EDIT: I don't know why I saw a lesser price at first...$750 for that ain't worth it.

Don't dismiss the solid state for bass.
An old Acoustic amp (or Sunn) will absolutely kill.
They're also significantly cheaper than 1K and much lighter.

Also the Ampeg SVT.

Also Peavey anything.

Also you should be able to snag a roughed up Orange/Matamp/Two-syllable company with brightly coloured vinyl for around that.
good deals are here.

SVT is the clear answer to the question. Our bass player made the switch last year from a 1001rb and we're all a lot happier. The other great amp to get would be an acoustic 370 or 350. It's not tube but it sounds awesome and can be had for cheap.

Thanks for all the suggestions dudes, I have since convinced him to man up on either an SVT or Meatsmoke and it looks like we are gonna be running all Verellen in a few months :omg:

I have had an eye out on an acoustic 350! I think we will both be running dual SS/Tube rigs in the near future and thats the one ive been trying to grab for Bass.

Idk what it is about the 1001RB...sure it keeps up...but where are the balls? We have never been fortunate enough to bi-amp the signal from it...but the only time I have ever liked their tone is when run in conjuction with a tube amp or another 1001RB on different settings.

Hey a sunn coliseum bass amp popped up on the local craigslist and my bass player may check it out. I have a concert bass, so is the coliseum similar or a bit different. I was reading the preamp is different and has a different eq set up. Have any of you guys played the amp?

Tried one once. Nice sounds. 300 watts, I think?

Solid deal if you can snag it for $300-ish.

Lets see.....

Ampeg SVT (if you look hard enough you can find deals on them, granted you would still need to have it checked out by a tech. This goes for almost any tube amp)
Ampeg V4 , V4B
Mesa 400
Mesa D180 (overdrive channel is pretty good)
Fender/Sunn 300T
Orange AD200B ( You can find them used around $1400 or so. I know it's more than you said but .....)
Traynor's (The old ones are pretty cool and the new ones are also pretty good)
Trace Elliot V series
