Explorer control plate

Post by fuzzywolf »

So I have a Gibson Explorer that needs a little care because I'm thinking about selling it in the near future. The only problem is that the back control plate is missing (I bought the guitar used and it came without the plate). Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to find one. :grumpy:
Would anyone have any suggestions on where to find one?
Thanks!

Does it just take a standard Gibson back control plate, or is it a different shape?

Is it the triangular shaped plate or the oblong one with the round ends?

Either way, if you can't find an original you could probably have one made
from a place that cuts custom pickguards or cut one your self from pickguard material.

No problem!

If you want to go the DIY route here's some blank material:

http://guitarfetish.com/Uncut-Pickguard-Material-Great-for-Custom-Pickguards-_c_224.html

If you want to go super DIY you could use an old record or something similar. :idk:

those injection moulded plastic bins you can get from most places that sell that sort of thing are a good source of plastic for making covers. Cover the hole with masking tape. Use a sharp knife and cut out the shape you need, then use the tape as a template for the plastic. Cut it out with scissors, poke some holes through where the screws go and voila! Youll have a cheap replacement in about 10 minutes.

I haven't checked this page recently and I just saw the last post.
Thank you soooooo much rot gut. This is exactly what I've been looking for for months.

Even though the one you posted here obviously sold a couple days ago, they were selling another one in the "more from the same seller" section.
Bought it immediately for $3.75 with no shipping.

My search is finally over.

I got a heavily modded SIlvertone Stratotone a while back with a Gibson style pickup selector switch on the bass side of the upper bout. Whoever did the mod chopped a hole out of the back to do the wiring and then covered it with a stick on acoustic guitar pickguard!!! So bobo. Hahahaha. So yeah, don't do that.
