So I'm turning 18

Post by grim »

Whats so great about turning 18 again? I hate smoking cigs, and I've got the whole voting thing covered. Whats so great about being old enough to go to real prison, and being old enough to be drafted, and being old enough to get my ass kicked by another 18 year old and not have him go to jail for hitting a minor? I can't drink, I still live with my parents, I still have to follow their rules, and turning 18 won't even get me any extra lays. In fact, all that turning 18 does for me is essentially make my life harder. Who decided that 18 years of age was the golden age anyways? I'm even scared of My best friend Mary Jane because now IF i manage to get caught, I will essentially get a drug charge on my permanent record. Damn this sucks, I miss being a "kid" at least then all i had to worry about was being jumped by a bunch of kids, and I didn't have to worry about all this adult stuff and getting in trouble was a slap on the wrist.... Don't get me wrong, I'm not one who gets in trouble hardly if at all, but damn, 18 sucks hardcore.

I think I'll end my rant....

And there will come a time when you remember 18 as the good times.

And there will come a time when you're 45 years old, and -- with the possible exception of maybe the drinking or parents thing -- you still think exactly those same points you just listed.

Welcome to "adulthood". We all wanna go back at times; you are not alone....

You still have lots to learn young Padawan. Here in the U.K becoming 18 means a lot i.e you get to vote, drink alcohol, get a driving license, go to clubs, work, etc, etc.

The only real advice I can give you is the phrase carpe diem, which if you don't know means seize the day. :hello:

Don't worry, most things suck, you just have to overcome the universal suckedness and do your own thang.

...and start saving, even a little bit, or you will get to my stage in life and say, "Hmmm, retirement in 12 years. Better start looking for a nice appliance box to live in while I can still move it."

You can always get a credit card. Rack up a lot of debt buying guitar pedals. Then when you can't pay them off, you call the federal government, and, BAM! you'll get a cool $70 billion.

Or they'll just ruin you life.

I'd shoot for scenario 1.

Don't feel bad... At least you're not 20 and living with your parents.

Don't feel too bad. It's not that uncommon in this day and age. If you were in India, you might live your whole life with your parents...and their parents.

You just have to find creative place to go have sex.

BTW, re: yer best bud MJ - I'm 34 (egads!) and know plenty of "productive adults" my age and older who have a relationship with her (girl gets around!) and are doing just fine. Discretion is the better part of valor. After a while you'll see: when it comes to knowing what life/being grown up is all about, everyone's faking it.

That makes a lot of sense, not only about being grown up, I'm 18 and have come to see such demonstrations. I always start to wonder in my own head if people really care or if they're just pretending to because it's what they're supposed to do, and is that justified caring?

Before I go too off topic, I'll stop.

Since I'm apparently one of "the old ones" in this conversation, I'd say that, while "they" do care, they don't know any better than the rest of us (outside of what they've experienced), and so they fake it / wing it / improvise as best they can. That's why I've always felt that it's best to get out of your comfort zone, travel, meet freaky people, meet straight people, meet as many different kinds of people as you can... oh, and make music with as many of those people as you can...

That's some very good advice.

I've been lucky in a way, moving a lot growing up and later in the military and my career, I got to travel all over the world. I've been to some great places and some, where nobody should ever have to go, including the people who live there.

There is one universal truth; you can become friends with people regardless of back ground, culture, race or any thing else as long as you accept them as who they are. Ok don't talk politics or religion or try to convert any one.

I have a few 'I wish I hadn'ts' in my life but very few 'I wish I hads'.
Well not counting being to stupid to realize that some one was hitting on me.
