Apple Lion Is Here... Time To Install Snow Leopard

Post by CBA »

Hey friends.

Two years ago I installed Leopard onto my Macbook Pro. I'm pretty sure this was right around the time Snow Leopard came out.

Now that the next generation of OS X is here, I want to install its predecessor.

Do any of you recall what it took to install Snow Leopard on your Mac? When I went from Tiger to Leopard, I used CCC (I think that's Carbon Copy Cloner) and put my whole damn everything on my external harddrive. I've been using Apple's Time Machine to do basic backups since then, and I've never had to go back for everything. My machine is quite reliable.

So yar... should I do a totally clean install after a disk format? Or does Snow Leopard have some sort of easy install thing?

Yer pal,

The Snow Leopard install didn't work for you? I upgraded to Snow Leopard from Leopard when it was first released, and didn't have any problems. Do you have an Intel Mac?

Snow Leopard worked, Joshy, but a lot of the applications wouldn't do shit. I have no idea WHY my internet would be affected, but it just WOULDN'T WORK. The horse that broke the camel's straw was when I spent all day installing Logic 9 again, 7 DVDs, then went to install the simple application for running my Duet (Maestro), and it told me it wouldn't work with 10.6 or higher. And I couldn't look up any info online to see what I could do because the internet just wasn't working. I was drunk at this point and yelling at my Macbook when I decided to just wipe that ass and reinstall Leopard. Did that... and NO PROBLEMS. Internet works fine, Logic works fine, etc.

And yep, I agree on YAY 10.4.11. I got my Macbook Pro and that was what was default installed on it... again, never ever ever had any problems. It just WORKED. Leopard came out, and I waited quite a while to put that on, but I needed it for Logic 9, so I upgraded. Hardly any problems. Then what I described above happened. Problems problems problems.

Obviously things are FINE THE WAY THEY ARE, but that's just a given. I think Apple hit their epoch/apex/eschaton with Leopard... when Apple kinda blew up for the second time and they needed something a little more mass market friendly... they did Leopard, and it's fine. Then they started with the world domination with iPods and iPhones and iPads and iFarts and everything... and they keep trying to innovate when it isn't necessary. At least I only lost $30 on Snow Leopard.

Well that stinks. It's always hard to make suggestions when you don't have the computer in front of you. Updating to a newer OS would mean there's a good chance you would have to upgrade certain drivers, and applications and such. Snow Leopard kind of drew the line in the sand. Certain programs stopped working unless you upgraded to a newer version. Adobe CS3 and Pro Tools 7.3 are a great example. I had a hard time getting Pro Tools to run on our new iMac (Snow Leopard)... it's still not working. I need to find my PT 7.4 install somewhere. Technology.... it's full of win when it works.

I think the issue is that Snow Leopard is that some parts of it are 64-bit and that causes issues with some apps. I just installed it the other day, and a few things of mine don't work now (nothing important). I also think something got changed with the video drivers as well, because I can't get my shit to look right without cranking the resolution so high that I can't read anything.

The main reason I even bothered with Snow Leopard so late in the game is because App Store won't run on Leopard, and I really want to just download Lion instead of buying a disc and waiting for it. So I'm hoping the next upgrade (in a few days, likely) will iron the display issues I'm having.
