Am I paranoid or are they getting phased out

Re: Jewel cases
it's the record companies way of "going green" and saving money. it sucks and it's extremely annoying, but unfortunately it looks like that's the direction the music industry is heading in.

Re: Jewel cases
I approve, actually. They save space on the rack, it opens up the door for creativity (are you as sick as I am of shitty two-page spreads full of publishing information?), it's eco-friendly, and it looks way cooler than crappy jewel cases.

Yeah I hate jewels, they always break at the wrong time. The cardboard ones are cool if done right, who ever designs Boris's different one are just great, I think the Altar CD is just incredible, it's like a Vinyl cover/book, the CD even has a plastic sleeve
I would like to see more of that, particularly in these times where do to down loading I feel if you are going to do a physical form of media it has to be cool.

i agree, i am a huge fan of the paper thingies. i do appreciate it when bands do a paper/plastic hybrid though. like, when there's a little case on the inside for the cd to clip into. i'm always afraid that sliding in and out of cardboard will scratch up my cds.

Re: Jewel cases
You can always buy Jewel Cases pretty cheap and transfer the disks & artwork if that's your preferred method of keeping disks.
Cardboard shouldn't scratch disks though, I do worry the same but there's no reason it should, just like taking a disk out of a jewel case with a tight center can feel like it might snap... hasn't happened yet.

Yep. I like having the physical copy, and they just get cooler and more creative as they become less common.

Re: Jewel cases
if jewel cases get thrashed you can replace them at minimal cost and recycle the old case. if "green" packaging gets thrashed you either have to throw it out and create an entire alternate package, or buy an entire second copy. stupid, and not "green" in the least...a perfect example of faux "green-ness" for effect that's actually counter-productive.

Re: Jewel cases
CD packaging is at an all time high really. There are way more 50+ page booklets and clever/artistic packages than ever before. At least with the weird shit I listen to.

WTF are you doing to your CDs that causes the packaging to get "thrashed"?
