I just encountered a pretty severe case of this on another forum. This particular forum is dominated by blues and classic rock and the average age is likely mid-40s (or maybe even higher). It's......ummmm.....not the most open-minded demographic (as you might guess) but I was actually kinda shocked at the sheer amount of vitriol and hate leveled first toward "hipsters" (though their grasp on what constitutes one is tenuous) and then toward youth in general.
I'm 41 but look easily ten years younger so I have a boot in both 'camps' so to speak. I'm really embarrassed for my generation; seeing lots of my peers become crotchety old farts is not one of the things I looked forward to, I must say.
I realize that this forum trends considerably younger so I guess consider this an update from someone straddling youth and middle-age.

with a forum like that its that kind of mentality that draws people, speaking from experience; its not an age thing really, it just so happens that what started drawing those people in in the first place was that they had something in common with others there. like here, there are a ton of older members, a good chunk of them over the age of 40, MM is, what, 64? according to his post in the age thread at least. I really don't think its an age thing so much as its just a "oh you feel this way too and you're on this forum? Ok, I can be here too then"

Actually it's a forum centered around a particular guitar. I happen to like this type of guitar but apparently this particular group of people will only tolerate those who think as they do. If you don't share their point of view then you have "lots to learn." Guess my guitar isn't 'age appropriate'? Or maybe my playing is 'immature'?
I'm too old to be lectured by even older men about what to think (and why they're "right"). I refuse to believe that one has to hold opinion X once you reach age Y. EFF that. THAT'S groupthink. Not everyone older has to share the same viewpoint---and that's precisely what galls me about that forum. Follow the leader. Sycophancy.
I'm probably going to leave that forum now anyway. I don't need 'friends' like that.

Pretty sure that's just lack of self-esteem, ignorance, bluster, and encroaching mortality on their part. Everybody wants to feel powerful and in the know, moreso the older people get. I got one of those patronising geezer responses on another forum that is kinda known for it, a "How old are you? You got a lot to learn sonny boy..." I like to play the straight man in answering stuff like that, I think it's kinda funny. He backpedalled a bit when I said 42.
But boy do you have a lot to learn
(What kind of Les Paul do you have anyway?)
Good deals done with all these guys Canada, we put the "u" in satire

TGF?
Anyway the internet is full of these kinds of people. And Vintage amp/guitar fora are dominated by people who are still stuck in the 60's/70's.
However not all of them are bad. It's just the internet is full of w*nkers
I'm 35. I hope to be as old as you one day. No way of knowing. But as for this particular situation, I think it's because every kind of person loves telecasters, not every kind loves fuzz. Every Good Boy Deserves Fuzz.
Hang out here. We won't force you to like the stuff we like, but you will. Because everything we like is AWESOME.
