FYFest was amazing

Post by htsamurai »

just thought I'd let you all know
also, I'm sore everywhere and the few places I'm not sore I'm sunburned
Abe Vigoda was amazing, Warpaint had the best set of the entire 37 band bill
seriously, 4 girls, all DAMN good at what they did and the three not playing drums all sang beautifully. And when singing together it was this weird, beautiful siren-like chorus. The last song they played turned into this like....7minute jam full of build ups and time and bpm changes. The drummer was so good and so on it that my friend who would complain about neil peart if he got the chance couldn't stop praising her for a good while after their set. The bassist was freakin cute, played a 4003, couldn't stop dancing and had some of the coolest bass lines I heard the entire fest. The two girls on guitar, one lead singer one lead guitarist, were so in sync with each other that when I closed my eyes I couldn't tell who was playing what parts. One played a mustang the other a strat. I seriously can't even joke about how good their set was, everything from the vocals to the tone's coming out of the amps (even w/ the mustang playing guitarist's deluxe reverb blowing mid set and being replaced with a jcm 900) was so spot on that it made the album unlistenable on the 4 hour ride back home, even though they were the most talked about band of the bill.
Washed Out put on one hell of a show despite technical difficulties and was one of the few sets i saw where the crowd was visibly angry that the set had to end, Ariel Pink was another and holy crap was that an amazing, like, 6 songs. My friend is a music douche and was really not feeling the first song, so basically I stopped paying him any mind and just enjoyed the show. After he was all "holy fuuuuuuu- dude, I didn't know you could do that kind of stuff live!" basically all the nuances to Ariels music that we all thought would have been missing due to them being studio magic, were there.
The Screaming Females guitarist can't be much over 4ft tall and played a strat in a way that wouldve had guys like Hendrix, Floyd and SRV staring in awe. seriously she was freaking beasting it up. School of Seven Bells was a lot of fun, danced their entire set with this really cute chick...who was high on like every substance available at the fest. Big Freedia had me laughing and jiving the whole time, she's like a 7' tall black rapper
"Freedia performs a derivative of Bounce reserved for self-proclaimed "Sissies" (a locally used name for biological men with varied and ambiguous sexual identities)"
Had two chicks on stage with him just booty dancing the whole time, then he was bringing people, guys and girls on stage from the crowd for a song called "Ass Everywhere"
had the most memorable line of the entire show
"I got that Gin in my system, somebody gon' be my victim"
and was unabashedly a man, a woman and something more all at once.
The closer I saw was The Rapture, the other closer was Panda Bear. Who I'm sure put on a great show and all, but there were people leaving his set to come see the Rapture. A sea of EASILY 3000 people, probably more like 5k though, all dancing to their tracks, ranging from ballady style stuff to straight up dance-to-this-now-or-you're-a-stupidhipsterdouchefag
I also saw The Goat...well caught a part of it, sucked balls. Let's Wrestle...ugh, not bad but not the greatest by any means, Davilla 666. Not my style. Cults sucked balls, Local Natives were more of a crowd, local, favorite. Didn't dig em. TED LEO WAS SICK BUT WASHED OUT WAS STARTING HALF WAY THROUGH HIS SET.

Screaming Females rule. I still haven't seen them since the new album came out, but everytime I have seen them, it's a joy.

Just picked up a couple of Warpaint tracks based on this alone. HT speaks the truth. Hottness.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.
