if I posted a picture of my friend who sings in a band I'm in on a thread like that she'd fucking stab me. And with good reason.

Yeah dude, I'd expect that from anyone I was in a band with. How bad is it to respect the people you make music with enough not to be ogling them behind their backs?
That is some gross old man shit.
"Yeah I play in a band that exclusively hires hot chicks to cover crap songs because that's the only way good looking women will have any contact with me. Fuck knows I can't get laid just playing this shit. I will say though, my denim on denim vest/strap combo is definitely starting to raise some eyebrows among the ladies at our shows. Who knows, maybe after 20 years of Billy Cyrus covers all my hard work musically and in the realms of fashion is starting to pay off?
Also I'm horny.
..... all the time.
I'll probably be masturbating in the car park later watching other couples in denim make out."

But really. None of you heathens knew about thumb rests? Who the fuck taught you lessons? I feel so sorry for the people in the audience at your weekend 4pm lounge gigs.

Because, it's just silly. Most of the players that blow your mind just play, some play "too hard" some play "too soft" some find that the best place to get hot cereal is to steal it from bears. I think people these days spend far too much time worrying about how to play vs just playing

And while I can appreciate people that put a lot of time into techniques and chops building they will never be a Mike Watt or Larry Graham or even a Jaco.. or even a Sid Vicious
also, how does one use a thumbrest while playing slap?

Gary Willis uses a ramp for his playing, looking into the details of the ramp (
found here) I can understand why it would be beneficial, and make it easier to get more consistent sounds.
Not that I'm an advocate of the ramp, I play with a pick
But I think it's fair to say that people have the right to do whatever with their instruments to improve them for themselves. It might not appeal to others, but if it works for you then why not? The key thing is not being a snob about it really and understanding everyone has their own preferences I guess?

All of the guys spent years improving their techniques, I guarantee you. Watch Jaco for instance. The guy had perfect technique. Look at his hands when he plays.
What I'm talking about is taking your finger and putting them too far down on the strings towards the body of your bass. I've seen a lot of bass player play like this and not only does it fatigue the shit out of your hands, it kills your strings ten times faster. I used to do it as well but learned over time I can achieve the same sound without beating the shit out of my hands.
I don't do slap bass or do it very, very rarely, so not sure on that one.
Sid Vicious was an atrocious player. I can't see him being called an actual bass player. One of the worst I've heard.

So true this. Why Malcolm Mclaren sacked an awesome songwriter and musician like Glen Mattlock and replaced him with a junky moron who couldn't sing, play bass or write a song if his life depended on it is beyond me.

Because McLaren was always about marketing and communication, never about music. And he was quite successful at that, too.

Got it in one.
Anyone else only listen to Bodies out of their recorded stuff?

Agreed...although such minor annoyances are immaterial compared to the prevalent attitude one encounters.
Those sites are inundated with "I always know what's best as an expert in how things work" fragile egos, whose sanctimony and insecurity are on full display in every miserable paint-by-numbers declaration of absolutism.
Everyone (who disagrees) is an idiot; dissenting opinions are interpreted as personal attacks causing the *individual* to become offended and outraged, launching into a belligerent yet passive-aggressive tirade of chained hyperbolic fallacy. It's like talking to arrogant, angry little children.
