Yeah, some of the stuff I've heard from my cousin, who has toured internationally in a straightedge hardcore band, of fighting with skinheads in the streets in parts of Europe / outside of concerts, and staying in the squats in slums were interesting. Now, they don't let the punks let them talk them into any of that, they go stay in a hotel when they travel internationally, and they take their wives. (They're in their late 30s/ early 40s.) Then again, my cousin was frequently out in Boston when that straightedge scene was going batshit crazy.

i'm really amazed that Racine is apparently such a pit. I guess somewhere in WI had to get the massive urban blight and deindustrialization thing.
when it comes to scary on Earth, i've already expounded at length on the terrifying nature of Africa. the places on Earth that scare me most are those which have as a regular feature a) exotic diseases or b) continuous long-term warfare and whose cultural basis is outside of Western influence. somewhere in a stinking jungle there's a microbe that wants to kill me, and nearby are several thousand highly committed ideological warriors who'd love to torture and dismember me first and who would have no moral qualms whatsoever about it. you can pretty much keep everything south of the Equator that isn't Australia/NZ and the entailed territoriesas far as i'm concerned.

oh, OK. that's the Tenderloin, which is a neighborhood hard by downtown San Francisco. it's full of residential hotels and transients and is known for its concentration of hookers, hard drug users/dealers, alcoholics, and the homeless. when i lived in SF i avoided the Tenderloin even in broad daylight...at night it's like something from Hieronymous Bosch.

The funny thing is that the Tenderloin runs diagonally through a district that now houses all of SF's startups (Twitter, etc.) And I was very tempted to move to SF to join startups, so I did my research. For some reason, we didn't think 2-3 blocks from the worst crime areas in the city was enough of a buffer. That, and the right opportunity didn't come up (that is, no one offered to relocate me and my GF and pay a living wage, but there were a *lot* of startup companies needing programmers in SF last year.)

I didn't vote in the poll, but I think it's safe to say that just about any town has it's "scary" spots.

I haven't travelled much, but I can say that there are places even in the small towns around where I live that I wouldn't dare visit after dark..

^ That.
I've been through the Tenderloin in SF, and pre-internet boom flophouses out there too. On vacation. That was a wild place in the 90's, it must have been crazy-fun to live there in the 80's and the days of The Vats and the early HC scene.
LA post-riots was a scary place too. I even flew home early from that trip.
But they still pale in comparison to soooooo many places in the world...

Ilha da Queimada Grande.
it's an island in Brazil that is solely inhabited by Golden Lancehead vipers, which are one of the most venomous snakes in the world. they only exist on the island and it's rumored that there are 5 of them per square meter. now don't get me wrong, i LOVE snakes. i plan on getting another one once i move out of my parents house. but i do not fuck with venomous, and that island is a shit ton of venomous.
