The first two seasons are gritty as fuck.
Definitely worth a look in.
The third season starts off strange and gets worse. They changed writers I think.
I heard it picked up in the fourth, but I need to rewatxh it all again.
There are some great moments on that show.

meh. i liked it a lot, but i kind of like the way it ends. i mean, if you read up on the IRL Deadwood, that's cool and all, but this way..... urrrrr. spoilers for those that have not watched yet -
who wants to see the town burn down? the main characters getting dealt blow after blow and the up in the air'ness of not resolving fits the tone really well? like the book said about Princess Bride, "Inigo and Fezzik probably got older and lost a fight, died ignominiously other characters blah blah, i like to imagine them continuing as they were".
PHRASING.
PARA-PHRASING.

The Sopranos, The Wire, and then Deadwood, started quality cable, basically rewrote the rules for it and set the stage for all the good and bad stuff that followed (Dexter, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones etc).
I'm currently enjoying the hell out of The Knick, it's the only show since Deadwood that I put in that class, the absolute highest level. I love me some Game of Thrones, but The Knick makes it look like kidstuff.
Spartacus was some good silly man fun (Sam Raimi), and had some great cursing that was like a different spin on the Deadwood style. Lots of gratuitous sex, violence & gore. Raimi & crew are still with Starz, now doing Ash Vs. Evil Dead, which is...exactly what it sounds like.

Haven't watched The Knick yet. If you're interested in the history of modern day cable by guys named David (suspicious lot) this is a really good read:

On the one hand, I want to say that I like to see creative people finish their creations. I think it's better if the artists get to decide when the work is finished.
On the other hand, I loved Six Feet Under but the last couple of seasons of that were just heartbreaking. Not bad, but they just hurt so much to watch.

Knick is doing it for me, finale was bonkers. But Leftovers blew my mind this year, best thing on TV. Except for maybe, maybe Black Mirror.

Molly Parker is super sexy. Damn.
No truer words. And she actually has y'know, talent.

I'm on the third/final season and think it's really good. Its a different feel than the previous two cause the plot/central theme has shifted to being about Mr. Hearst and his (and on a macro level) wealth and power vs. those without the same means. I have like 3 or 4 episodes left so I'm so I'm wondering how its all going to end.
Also, the bringing in of the actor Brian Cox was pretty good. He's a great actor.

Yeah I didn't make it too far into the third season. If the writing picks up again I'll give it another crack.
Those first three episodes were pretty terrible.

Finished. SPOILERS for anyone that hasn't finished it.
There was a lot of build up towards the end, that there would be a grand conflict between the Hurst/Pinkerton and the rest of the camp. That didn't happen and it was kind of obviously not satisfying on a base level - one expects the conflict is
going to happen given the building up to it. I don't know the ins and outs of the show in terms of when they knew there wouldn't be a forth season. I imagine they must have known during the third season, but IDK. So I don't know if the ended it as they did to allow for a continuation of the conflict involving Hurst, or not.
Ending shows is always a task. I kind of like how it just ended in a fade or with nothing big happening. It kind of jives with the nature of the camp, it seems - this kind of springing up, events happening, things moving on.
All in all it was a great show. Third season was definitely different but I liked where it went. I certainly wouldn't say it's better than the first two seasons, just different.
