People suck. Even the way she talks annoys me.

Also, I don't think she understands at all what "transgender" means.

Great response:

I didn't actually watch the video until just now, but that's what really pissed me off. Well, what pissed me off slightly more than everything else about the video.

That response is hilarious.

Fun fact: The girl scouts got a lot of shit for rejecting that girl originally. They're not exactly white knights (or warrior women) here, they just copped to pressure from public opinion.

The only thing to take from this is that most of the time the Christian Right gets in an uproar about things, it's a reminder that people can get pissed off about the most meaningless, marginal shit imaginable. Do they really give a fuck about some kid in Colorado? Or is this another attempt at trying to keep those scary, butt-sex loving gays away from their adorable little children?

In other buttsex-and-Fundamentalist news, what do you guys think of this anti-condom slogan:
Anal--God's Contraceptive
?

Didn't know that, but it's still pretty good that they did eventually accept her, hopefully it changes their policies from now on. Also it's good that there was public pressure to do it.

I'm pretty sure it was just one local troop leader that rejected the girl...

And, you know, I'm not saying that they shouldn't let transgendered peeps into the Girl Scouts. In fact, I haven't given the actual issue much philosophical thought at all, since I'm not interested in joining the Girl Scouts, don't have any daughters, and generally don't cross paths with them on a regular basis.

I have general reservations about public shaming, though I also think this is A) an underwhelming situation that is being exploited for larger talking points, and B) I don't see anything wrong with a trans joining the Girl Scouts if that's what she wants to do. The whole "keep girls safe" bit is fearmongering at it's most base.

That article's framework makes it seem that way. This one doesn't:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/1 ... lp00000009

Either way, I'm fairly positive that the organization as a whole had a hand in reversing the decision, and this isn't just a troop leader operating independently of the rest of the group.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the issue of gays in the Boy Scouts. The people with whom a private organization chooses to associate is just one form of protected expression under the 1st Amendment as interpreted by the Supreme Court of the United States (see: BSA v. Dale, 2000. The Girl Scouts have the right to deny anyone they want for any reason even if most people find it wrong.

This is one of those "I absolutely disagree with that, but I would risk my life to defend your right to do it" situations.

On a basic level, there's a big difference between the two.

And, yes, you're right, the Girl Scouts are protected by the First Amendment. I think they had enough foresight to see that letting the kid in would be a much better PR move than sticking to their guns.

I completely agree that they have the right to deny anyone (and if it's the law what I think doesn't matter anyway), that really hasn't been the point of the thread. I just really wish they wouldn't, and I'm glad that at least in this case they've chosen to accept someone 'different' when legally they didn't have to. You could say it means more and shows their committment to equality, except if they only did it due to pressure to avoid bad publicity, not so much.

I never got the hate on Boy Scouts. When I was younger I was in Boy Scouts and there were several gay kids in the troop. There were never any problems about it.

Yah, just adding a different perspective for the sake discussion.

And I think the Boy Scouts thing only applied to scout leaders, now that I think about it.
