Seriously, though, I think pedals are compared to amps in the wrong way. Especially but morons on Reddit.

Yeah, you can buy amps that cost the same as some pedals-- but you can also buy $20 pedals. Boss/Line 6/EHX pedals are pretty much the pedal equivalent of Marshalls and Fenders and such-- like $1000 amps (with a few cheap models). They're the mainstream stuff that pros use.

Boutique pedals can cost hundreds-- but boutique amps cost thousands.

Thus, pedals are quite cheap, and comparing a boutique pedal to a budget amp is silly.

lol.A serious response: Unlike something like, say, a compressor (the most overpriced things ever), reverb pedals are supposedly kind of difficult to design and build.

A good compressor is not a simple circuit to design...nor a good reverb. Do you think they are overpriced because you don't notice a huge benefit/difference in sound?

Oh I see the benefit, I just personally think there's a bit of price gouging where compressors are concerned.

you can buy amps that cost the same as some pedals, but the majority of the amps in that price range are going to be shitty amps. sure, you can get a nice little amp for the price of a Goatkeeper, if you're careful...and lucky. and know exactly what you're looking for.

given that so many compressor pedals are mere re-rubs of the Dyna-Comp/Ross boxes, i tend to agree that most compressors are wildly overpriced. the notion that people are paying $300 for something like the Mad Professor comp boggles my little mind. however, i have nothing but respect for folks who make a good optical compressor in a floor box.

This. The quality of a pedal that costs $200 from someone cool (like you) is so much higher than the quality of an amp that costs $200 (which will be made on an assembly line somewhere like china by someone paid fuck all). Don't these people understand basic economics, anyway? Whatever it costs a builder to make a pedal, they HAVE TO CHARGE YOU MORE THAN THAT for it to be worth their time. Either these people just don't see why they aren't entitled to rip off builder who put in a lot of hard work to make, let alone design and market, this pedal, or they have a seriously unrealistic estimation of how much it costs to do this stuff.
