Yes they are!! And they hate it here because we USED to make such cool shit, now we just make SHIT. Electro-pop, dance rock, burned out jam bands, what ever genre of music Pitchfork is hyping at the moment.... that's what it creates now. And with the change in demographic of the last 20 years the kids that are growing up are more concerned with keeping up with the jones's and buying expensive clothes and cars than with supporting local music or building a scene or even playing music in general. It's sad days around here, to get good music you generally have to go either north to B-More (which is all about straight up punk or black metal at the moment) or south to Richmond (theres always good music there IMO).BoatRich wrote:DAMNATION AD IS SO FUCKING GOOD. This is very true, there's actually a really awesome skramz scene in Richmond (anyone going to Swamp Fest..?) currently. That said, it would be really cool for DC to be an actual destination for heavier music again.

ORLY? I had no idea it still did! and agreed.... DC gets passed over sooooo much, its aggravating. The thing is what good venues are there that will actually book smaller bands? RnR? too small and the booking there is whack. Black Cat? Yeah good luck getting booked there unless youc an pull 200+ people or know someone in the headlining band. There's no venues like the old wilson center where it was all ages and massive enough to fit a couple hundred people. The biggest thing is the all ages shows, they used to be everywhere now they are nowhere no venues will book all ages shows due to the laws and cops around here.BoatRich wrote:This is very true, there's actually a really awesome skramz scene in Richmond (anyone going to Swamp Fest..?) currently. DC sucks because its a pain in the ass to drive in/through/park/leave. Everyone in DC doesn't want to leave, everyone outside doesn't want to go in.

St. Stephens Church, The Pinch, Comet Ping Pong, Dougout house, RnR Hotel, Velvet Lounge maybe? (Touche Amore and Pianos Become the Teeth played there), The Electric Maid if you ask nicely enough, The Lab if you know who to ask. Idk, we have venues, and there are lots of shows, but every time I go to a show there's like 6 people there when even two years ago the same ones would've been packed.Ancient Astronaught wrote:ORLY? Re: Real Screamo gear
Is there smaller than venues in DC other than Comet Ping Pong, etc. (Casa Fiesta, they still doing shows there?)? Granted, I haven't lived in the area for a year, but what I remember all those house venues kept on getting shut down at amazing speed. The one I remember going to the most was like a 5-10 minute walk off the Georgia/Petworth metro stop, but I can't remember the name of it now for the life of me.
DC scene was weird, that's about all I remember. Richmond is fucking tight though.

Casa's gone, there were too many noise complaints or something which sucks because that was my favorite place to play/eat. House venues go away like every four shows but there's always a new one popping up.Strange Tales wrote:Is there smaller than venues in DC other than Comet Ping Pong, etc. (Casa Fiesta, they still doing shows there?)? Out of that list St. Stephens is the only one that allows all ages shows (never heard or been to Dugout though) thats the big problem. The Lab is barely doing "loud" shows anymore from what I understand. Yeah man its the climate and culture around here, for some reason less and less people are coming out to shows.BoatRich wrote:St. Stephens Church, The Pinch, Comet Ping Pong, Dougout house, RnR Hotel, Velvet Lounge maybe? Comet Ping Pong... ick, I played there a couple times with an old band (Drop Electric) and Sasha the promoter is just horrible, out right horrible, I will never deal with her again. There's a bunch of smaller venues Rock n Roll hotel, DC9, Velvet Lounge, The Pinch... ETC. But if your not based out of Petworth or in a Petworth scene band nobody comes out to your shows. If pitchfork or any mainstream / local music review / promotion site (like BYT or DC Music Download in our area) is pushing your band though, you can pack clubs.Strange Tales wrote:Is there smaller than venues in DC other than Comet Ping Pong, etc. (Casa Fiesta, they still doing shows there?)? I agree though the scene is weird, it has been for a long time. Something changed in DC after 9/11 and hasn't been the same since.

DC9 is also all ages most of the time even though they have a bar? That place is really hard to book though. I have no clue why there aren't small all ages venues, the house shows issue is because the cops in DC and VA have cracked down on them hard due to entertainment tax/"underage drinking"Ancient Astronaught wrote:Out of that list St. Stephens is the only one that allows all ages shows (never heard or been to Dugout though) thats the big problem. The last show was like Loma Prieta, Fucking Invincible, Weekend Nachos, and a local though and it was fucking ridiculous. I thought the floor was gonna collapse.Strange Tales wrote:Whaaaa. Re: Real Screamo gear
After the bouncers killed that one guy DC9 is no longer all ages from what I understand. I know a guy who books out of there so I can get shows booked there if I wanted too. Emphasis on the WANTED too. Those stairs man... those god damn stairs.... same with Velvet Lounge and the Pinch. I hate DC stairs....BoatRich wrote:DC9 is also all ages most of the time even though they have a bar? That place is really hard to book though.
