Tired of Android, don't want Apple again: What else?

Post by Faldoe »

All I need is to access email, text, camera, music player, maps app. Micro SD would be good too. I don't care about additional apps.

I've had the iphone before but don't want the new one (though I miss using the beatmaker app). Have a Galaxy S5 and it's acting slow and stupid.

What other phones are out there with different OS'?

Stock android > samsung android. I have a galaxy tab pro brand new and I like the hardware but samnsungs take on android sucks.

My Moto X with closer to stock android is way more functional and has way less bloat. There are too many takes on android to really make a blanket statement (kinda like linux).

The only other real option is Microsoft phone which, I have heard, is awful. Unless you just go back to older-style-non-smart-phones phones which are still around.

Just download Aviate. It's a new browser/home screen for Android and it will instantly make you happier.

I mean, look at that!

I have a Windows phone, and it isn't great. No support for apps, but a great camera on it.

On top of that, don't forget to try out different keyboards on Android. Makes a world of difference (the stock samsung keyboard and autocorrect is terrible).

I read an interesting article recently that said that Microsoft and Apple had spent money on their software encoders which drastically helped the quality of their cameras. The android phones, even having almost identical hardware, were significantly worse because they haven't developed their encoders. It had a comparason between RAW data and the stock camera results on the androids, and it was pretty noticible the differences (less so on apple and microsoft).

I know Ubuntu (or Canonical actually) and Mozilla have been working in a mobile OS, you might want to check that.

I got rid of the stock android OS and installed Cyanogenmod the first day I got my first and current smartphone. It has been like 3 years and phone is still fast and stable as fuck.

I use a Window phone. I'm not an App user, I only need Audible and a music player.

I do like how simple you can make the interface.

Have been a long time Apple fan. Mac user for the last 10-years and iPhone for the last 7-years.

I still think that iPhone is bar none one of the sleekest smart phones you can buy. Despite people's shitty fucking backgrounds and the plethora of apps they download I still think iOS looks more visually appealing than any other mobile OS. I also believe that Apple's hardware looks significantly better as well. It's obviously a personal preference and maybe isn't helpful but it's my two-cents.

I'm sure the next generation iPhone will improve upon the camera, integrate some random Watch features and iOS 9 will likely be pretty bitchin' and way less troublesome than some of the other mobile OS' out there. There's something to be said for the usability of iOS and the App Store. And, for what it's worth, Apple Music (Apple's new streaming service) is fucking awesome. Forum-user Emptyparadigm has a sweet ass doom band called Khemmis and I've been streaming their album like mad via Apple music this last week.

Despite my "fanboyism" I'm currently in the process of building a PC, largely for gaming and upgrade-ability in the future. That's one thing that Apple has made more challenging over the years as my computing needs have changed. I love OS X but find the hardware, despite it's ease of use (lack of driver bullshit, etc), I still find it frustrating that I cannot upgrade the GPU on my system every few years and, after my long stint with Apple, I'm moving on for my computing needs... although perhaps I'll look in to picking up a MacBook Air for portable use in the future.

Does that require rooting the phone?

Also, music managers for android fucking suck. Having to use Kies and it blows.

Edit. Found Cyanogenmod, downloaded it but realized, or it seems, you need Windows computer, ya? On a Mac.

Yeah, I liked the iOS platform but the lack of options - no micro SD, sucks.

Which makes sense, more makers are leaving out Micro SD options cause they realize they can charge people more for larger storage capacity. Fuckers.

Android + ipad for the best of both worlds. It's just about necessary at this point, though the synth apps really make it a luxury. I like having the option of which OS/device to use for chromecast, and being ready for any other external gear that might interact with either OS, such as a camera, a pedal like the H9 or Multistomp, etc.
If a bigger phone is your style, the LG keyboard in the G series is nice, and the buttons get bigger on sideways mode.
