Brazilian Steakhouses

Post by Ugly Nora »

Anyone ever been to one of these places?

I went to one last night and it was an amazing experience. $45 per person all you can eat table side service of 15 different meats. You have a card on your table that indicates to the servers that you want more food, or if they should leave you alone for now. If your card indicates you want more food, there is a constant parade of servers coming by with different meats on skewers carving you off a piece of what ever they have if you want it. Of course you can ask for as little or as much of it as you want. And you can also ask your main waiter to send servers with a particular type of meat over to you if you are looking for something specific.

Here is what this place was serving:

Top Sirloin
Sirloin
Filet Mignon
Top Sirlion Garlic Tips
Beef Ribs
Lamb Chops
Leg of Lamb
Sausage
Chicken wrapped in bacon
Filet wrapped in bacon
Pork Loin with Parmesan
Pork Ribs
Jumbo Shrimp
Chicken Legs
Flank Steak

In addition to this they have a self serve salad bar that was amazing. In addition to some regular salad items, it contained things like raw Ahi tuna, salmon, rice/couscous, potatoes, cured meats and cheeses, quail eggs, roasted peppers, grilled asparagus and zucchini, mango shrimp salad, and some crab cabbage stuff that was delicious.

Definitely feeling fat today. Only in America. Well, I guess in Brazil too.

This place is only open for about 5 hours at a shot (like 5-10 pm on Friday's). We did 2 hours. 5 hours would be brutal.

Only Brazilian steakhouse I ever ate in was in Brazil, in Rio, in the late 90s. Along with everybody else who ate there that night (except the one guy who was a vegetarian), I came down with salmonella poisoning the following day. I was sick for months. I remember having to fly home from Sao Paulo via Miami, New York and LA back to Sydney. It was around 30 hours in the air and the only positive was that I was passed out for a large chunk of it. Once I was diagnosed with salmonella poisoning I was put on a government register and not allowed to leave the country until I was clear, which meant weekly stool samples and general unpleasantness until my shit complied with Australian governmental standards.
Needless to say, I have not gone near a Brazilian steakhouse since. In fact, just seeing the words "Brazilian Steakhouses" in the thread title made by bowels clench reflexively in fright.

I'd imagine that your experience is based not so much on the style of restaurant, but rather just simply eating in a shit hole 3rd world country. I'd consider it a personal favor if you tried a brazilian steakhouse style restaurant in a first world country. I think you'd enjoy it.

^ I'd like to, but you know what they say: once bitten, twice shy. Or in my case: once shitten, I'm never going near a fucking Brazilian steakhouse again…

The one I've been to around my neck of the woods is called Fogo de Chao. Same deal, fancy salad bar (good stuff, but its a distraction!), some decent sides (garlic mash, fried plantains, polenta), and a meat buffet that comes to you. While I love a good cut of steak, my favorite thing there is probably the Parmesan encrusted pork loin. Their signature drink, the Caipirinha is a pretty good cocktail, and they have really good key lime pie.

My friends and I like taking a half day off work and going for lunch instead. You'll save $10-15 off the cost of the meal and they serve all the same food.

I mean I'd take large parts of Brazil over the landlocked parts of the US, first or third person.

I'd take Brazilian chicks over American chicks for sure.

There is a Fogo de Chao around me also, which I heard was really good. I checked out the menu and it seems like pretty much the same experience as the place I went to. I'd like to check it out sometime. A friend of mine who has been to both liked Fogo de Chao better.

Yeah I went to one in Edinburgh once and it was pretty cool. Brought round a nice selection of meats, I was absolutely stuffed by the end!
