I'M IN KOREA/JAPAN, HELP
I've been staying at a hostel in Hongdae with friends for four days now, we've got a bit more time here, then a weekish in Itaewon (guessing at that spelling), some time in Busan, and a week in Tokyo. Those familiar, gimme some cool shit to do! Especially live music to seek out.
I broke off from the group last night, planning to skip dinner and sleep, when I followed the sound of sax into a basement bar next door, saw a pretty cool jazz band (Wish Morning), had an absinthe. It did me fucking wonders hearing music that wasn't clubby, or samey busker dudes.
I wanna find more stuff off the path that my Korean roomie's had us on, especially in Japan, since he's been there but don't know dick about weird music/scenes there. Gimme your enthusiastic knowledge.

In Tokyo for live music check out the following venues:
SuperDeluxe (Roppongi) - mostly noise/jazz/electronic/experimental, it's an underground warehouse kinda art space with a bar
Shelter (Shimokitazawa) - super chill small place, often has cool mathy/punky bands
Earthdom (Shin-Okubo) - mostly grind/punk/hardcore, loud as hell
UFO Club (Koenji-minami) - small bar/venue usually mixed lineups
WWW (Shibuya) - bigger hall but worth checking whats on
Tsutaya O-nest (Shibuya) - more expensive usually but they put on some great acts
UNIT (Daikanyama) - generally bigger bands or international acts
Club Goodman (Akihabara) - often progressive/jazz/experimental rock, cool tiny place
most will have something awesome on at least once or twice a week are are easy enough to get to in metro tokyo area.

What kind of music are you into? Tons of shows are posted on twitter from Japan, so if you let me know what week you'll be in Tokyo I can post shows that are happening.

Cool! All the stuff people have mentioned sounds good, noisy, experimental, mathy, punk, jazz, whatever. Lightning Bolt, Battles, Man Man, Tom Waits are some of my favorites. I'm down for some lighter stuff too. I don't have a Twitter, but I'd still be able to see the tweet if I looked for it, right?Strange Tales wrote:What kind of music are you into? Apparently you can only look at people's following lists if you have a twitter account which is a boner. But yea, if you're going to be in Tokyo next week, I'd definitely try and hit this up.

Re: I'M IN KOREA/JAPAN, HELP
We dropped in on SuperDeluxe while derping around Roppongi the other night and it was 3,700 yen for entry and one drink, which seemed steep. I could hear steel drum and regular drums on the other side of the door. Is that kinda price normal here? Which of the places you've mentioned might be on the cheaper side?backwardsvoyager wrote:In Tokyo for live music check out the following venues:

Re: I'M IN KOREA/JAPAN, HELP
Hmm there isn't much of a regular price structure but i was generally paying 1000-4000 yen for smaller shows + 500 yen for a drink every time. It is definitely on the expensive side overall because of the way live houses work over there, but i thought it was worthwhile because the shows were so well organised and smaller artists were still getting paid.
I remember Shelter in Shimokitazawa was pretty cheap and the 500 yen drink ticket was for unlimited beer, Superdeluxe was only like 1000 yen when i went which was weird because it was like Merzbow and a bunch of other people.
Usually the gig guides and posters etc will tell you the price beforehand so just peruse tokyogigguide, facebook, venue websites etc if you're not sure i guess.

Re: I'M IN KOREA/JAPAN, HELP
Yea, shit costs a lot more there because they have to rent out all live spaces, and they start making some money on a show when ~100 people show up (if I remember correctly from what a friend was telling me).

Outta curiosity, what would you have told me? We got sick of Hongdae pretty quick, so I'm interested to hear what we missed.12XU2A3X3 wrote: i was in hongdae last summer, wish i could have seen this earlier, could have helped. sry
