I had a song that I liked, but it never gelled with the band. So I broke it down into two songs, trashed a few riffs, wrote maybe 2 thirds as many riffs again and now I have two songs that work really well and that work with the band. We play them at at different tempo, and they go in different directions both in terms of feel and which chords are used, so unless you know that they used to be one song you couldn't tell.

I'm all for recycling!

I do this too, my pop punk bands EP came almost entirely out of practice riffs I'd been playing for years

We do it constantly. I actually have a riff that's carried over from my last band that I cannot place in a song, but after four years it finally found it's home and I'm stoked on it. We did record it and are about to digitally release the album, but the song is no longer played and the new song is very different, save for the recycled riff. It's your music.

I was never a huge fan of Fall of Troy, but I believe they did this a lot...or even re-did their songs entirely...
