Any of you fuzzbros using a chromebook for generally internetting and streaming? Work gets really slow during the summer, so I was thinking about picking one up to take to the office so I can dick around on the internet, stream movies, and write. I'm pretty sold on the idea, but haven't been able to use one for more than a few minutes to get a feel for them.
So here's what you should tell me:
Do you miss having a 'real' laptop?
Is 2gb ram enough, or should I be looking at the models with 4gb?
Chromebooks?

Re: Chromebooks?
When I worked in software support, I heard pretty negative things about Chromebooks. 2gb isn't really enough for much at all.
My son has a Kindle HD and that was a really good purchase. Not sure how big you want the screen to be, but the Kindle has good battery life, a really nice screen for the size and is generally pretty tough.

Re: Chromebooks?
I have one, noodle around on it most night's at home, when I don't feel like dragging out my mac
it works fine
I check work e-mail, watch videos
listen to music
do ILF jank
super light, battery never dies either so it is awesome for wandering around the house
I haven't found many limits from an internetting standpoint
I think I only have the 2gb at don't have many issues
my daughter does have the smaller Kindle HD and that's a pretty solid choice as well

I've been doing some comparison shopping for my parents, if you're going chromebook I think the Toshiba 2 is the way to go. 4gb RAM - never hurts to have more RAM, will make it more useful for longer, and increase resale if you need to go that route - and has the nicest display of any of the CBs I've seen in person.

That's kinda what started the whole thing. I have an HP Touchpad that's aging and will be in need of replacement soon, so I was looking at new tablets around the same size. Then I started thinking about laptops, which led me to Chromebooks. If I didn't want to write with it, I'd probably be looking at tablets still.aens_wife wrote:When I worked in software support, I heard pretty negative things about Chromebooks. 2gb isn't really enough for much at all.

Nice. So no significant lag with a few tabs open? I read that they all 'lag', but then the reviews are saying with 'moderate usage' and defining that as like 15-20 tabs open and streaming music and/or video simultaneously, which is well beyond my expectations for general use.hbombgraphics wrote:I haven't found many limits from an internetting standpoint

I do have a computer at work, but I work for the county, so they get all uppity if I stream videos, or browse a forum and stumble across a nipple or wang. Plus I write and blog for my book, which I don't really want IT poking around on. Plus I want a new toy, so there's that
In my own search, I keep coming back to the Acer Chromebook 13 and the Toshiba 2. The Acer can be had for like 100 less, but that Toshiba screen is supposed to be all kinds of good.doommeow wrote:I've been doing some comparison shopping for my parents, if you're going chromebook I think the Toshiba 2 is the way to go. 4gb RAM - never hurts to have more RAM, will make it more useful for longer, and increase resale if you need to go that route - and has the nicest display of any of the CBs I've seen in person.

I recommend just getting a Surface Pro. Can use it as a tablet then hook it up to monitors for usage at home.

So I ended up selling my Tele today and walked into Best Buy. And now I'm typing this on my Toshiba Chromebook. Pretty slick machine that seems like it's gonna fit my needs really well.

Re: Chromebooks?
Yeah man, it's awesome. I only use my desktop for privateering things from the internet, heavy duty word processing, and grading papers now - but that's mostly just to keep me in a 'you're in your fucking office, now do some work' mindset.
