DIY haircut

Post by Doctor X »

on another topic a few people here mentioned they have diy haircuts, i thought about doing it a couple of times but chickened out.

however i've now reached the point again where the balance between carrying on with the current hair growth, and the risk of the bodge-job hairdresser gamble, is tipping towards getting it cut again.
where to get it cut? i dont know, i get this stress every time. its always different random people even at the same places, sometimes they do a good job, sometimes not, and i cant always tell straight away until after i've washed it a few times and its recovered from their industrial strength hair mulch shampoo

in my imagination i just get a pair of scissors and cut it myself and it works out perfectly, how did it work out for you?

I just take clippers to it when it gets "too long." The downside is that I routinely have awful hair, but the upside is that I can wear hats all the time to avoid being mocked for it.

This is pretty much me

Spent the last 5 or so years just buzzing it down

I did find a nice lady who does a good job, but I don't trust her much anymore

just experiment. you can always trim it down to 0.1 or shave it it you did a horrible job. just prepare with LOADS of patience if you want a good outcome, as a beginner it will take longer to do it, but it's worth it imo.

I shave my entire head, face included, once a week with electric clippers. Cost and worry free.

how long is your hair? I'm one of those people you might have meant. My hair is about shoulder length, which is much easier to cut imo, because I can trim the back, sides and bangs without needing to turn around and try to see the back of my head. I've fucked up a few times but I've been doing it so long now that it's old hat.

^ truth. that length is a lot more difficult to fuck up. i'd also recommend getting a pair of layering scissors because with those you can just go crazy on the ends and they'll look consistently uneven rather than any awkward cuts sticking out.
i did that years ago but prefer short-ish hair now and it's way harder not to fuck it up, it usually takes a few days of tweaking to look right, i've been doing it for a long time so i don't really get stressed if it looks shit and if anything i find it fun to just experiment..

yeah, good point - you really have to take that approach of 'constantly evolving on a subtle level' instead of 'I'm going to sit down and cut my hair right and that's it' if you want to start doing it yourself.

my hair, like most things for me, is 'in between'
its not short that i can get away with shaving/trimming it right down if i mess it up, and its not long enough that i can just cut the ends.
i'll have to cut into the body of it

its grown longer now, but probably looking at it being 2-3 inches

i'll look at those layering scissors and at youtube tutorials ... but i'll probably end up putting it off and putting it off, then chickening out and going to some hairdresser place with the usual random results

Trying to blend my hair from shorter sides to longer top is so annoying. I wish I had more hands.

I really wish Pavement sucked because the people who really like Pavement tend to suck, but they're so good.

Yeah I usually do a cut with the clippers myself, pretty easy. Like, a bigger guard for the top, then a shorter guard for the sides and back. Sides start from the line back from my widows peak (natural part line, I guess), down. Just tie something like a scarf or a rolled up t-shit around your head, to form a line across the back of your neck, as high or low as you want, to buzz your neck and not look too bad. About level with the bottoms of my earlobes is where I set it.

The only thing I haven't figured out is where the short guard cut should meet the long guard cut on the back of my head. Just behind the crown, I'm thinking.

But yeah, I normally let it grow till it looks like shit and annoys the hell out of me, then do that. Really hate going somewhere to get it cut, for whatever reason. Doing a nice looking cut with scissors seems like it would be harder, though.

You could get one of those dog grooming vacuum/trimmer things.

The word bangs. in Australia we call it a fringe. I was once getting my haircut by a friends wife and she asks me how I like my bangs? I was a bit confused about her question. Asking me about sex like that. But I told her that I like it any way. Me on top, the chick on top, doggy style, the reverse cowgirl is a personsal favourite. I just like to bang full stop. Then I found out she meant my fringe  awkward! She is from Germany. They call it a bangs there too.
In regards to self haircuts. I use the clippers. No 1 clip or shave it bald if I' can be fucked.
