^holy fuck, I do that O_O not all the time but I do.
I noticed that I don't quite always articulate as I should and that I had some of those weird things I do during conversations that were basically involuntary; but I've always loved "cute girls on tv" so I might have picked it up as a kid growing up even. well, thanks, pretty enlightening for sure.

it's a 'cool' thing. every generation has their annoying/endearing little 'cool/not cool' idiosyncrasies. kids do it because friends they want to be like do it. and it's a ticket into a peer group. if you want to belong to that group you have to do it, or you make everyone else in the group look stupid for doing it. a belonging thing. ultimately the whole nonsense arrives to the group/demographic through tv.

it's also an insecurity thing. the desperately wanting to sound jaded and blasé about everything, when in reality the person talking is thirteen and knows virtually nothing at all (compared to most adults) about what really goes on in the adult world. not because impressionable teens are necessarily stupid (though some of them like so are). but simply because they don't live in that world. they live in a bedroom in their parents' house, they are not allowed to do a lot and they have to be home by ten.
but if they put on a world-weary 'went jet-skiing in monte carlo over the summer, did a shit load of drugs, yeah' drawl, it's like dressing up. for five minutes they can fantasise that they are the grown-ups they so desperately want to be. it's aspirational.

i suppose the down-side is that if you still talk like that at twenty-five and are going for an important job interview, it may be something that is held against you (however unfairly). purely because that mode of speech is seen as deeply embedded among the airheads. so until you have been given the opportunity to prove you are not an airhead, you may be misjudged because of it.

AQI (australian question intonation) is also rife among the same demographic. and that is far more annoying.

Australian Question Intonation (although, I didn't realise that phenomenon had a name) would probably have evolved out of our early penal history and basically would have been a way of avoiding a whipping (or some other medieval style of torture. No I'm not even kidding.) So basically, one could never give an affirmative or negative answer to a governor or convict guard as they were highly aggressive sociopaths and, in some cases, psychopaths, who in some instances were offered the choice to travel here as a convict or serve time as a guard for their crimes (we got the cream of the crop), who would have probably tortured you just for the fuck of it. So it becomes a matter of feeling out what you think they want to hear.
This would have continued to occur as settlement went on. Troopers were pretty much allowed to do whatever the fuck, and of course we were (and still are) the most racist place on the planet.

But, thank you. Pique is the correct way and I'm glad you mentioned it.

the tate britain museum in london is built on the site of the old millbank penitentiary where the transport ships would collect the oz bound crims http://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/ ... ank-prison
it's quite an interesting area if one ever visits, just over the river is the MI6 building and battersea power station

Ax just looks wrong to me if you're talking about the choppy thing (or, alternatively, a thing getting cancelled, etc.). Also because I was outvoted at work and now we use Ax instead of Axe.

The rest of it I can basically ignore if I pretend it's Prince song titles.
