Recommend an Octavia / Tone Machine clone?

Post by mathias »

Hi all,

Missing my Dano french toast that I had years ago. I recently got it in my head that certain solos would sound cool through an octavia-style octave-up fuzz. Are there any good ones out there? It'd be interesting if it also had a blue box or octave-down feature that I could switch or blend in.

Smaller (I've been collecting mini pedals), cheaper, or more features are all interesting attributes but not required.

Thanks in advance! :hello:

MI Audio Pollyanna?

French Toast is a Tone Machine I think, not Octavia.

Ah, you're probably right. I don't remember these things anymore.

I'm after that octave-up fuzz sound, in any case.

Not really Octavia-like, but I'm a fan of the Green Ringer. :D

Word. The Polyanna's got two sub octaves you can dial in, is why I mention it, and a dry blend which might be helpful dialing in the texture you want for your wyckyd hott solos

HBE UFO is a nice octave up pedal. I think it's a clone of a Tone Machine. :idk: Not sure but it is a decent sounding pedal with foot switchable octave up.

MXR has La Machine:

EQD has the new version of the Fuzz Master General (which I've been lusting after):

Joyo Voodoo fuzz is a pretty cool Tone Machine/Superfuzz clone with a switchable octave. They're also like 35 dollars on Amazon

+1

Wasn't blown away with mine, but the circuit is supposedly just one small mod away from being a spot on Tone machine clone. The fuzz isn't too hot on it's own imp, but I'm sure it'd be useable if you'd stack it with another drive pedal. And the joyo is the only cheap TM clone I know of that comes with the two switches.

HBE seems like your best bet if you don't mind spendinf a little more.

The Fuzz Master general is an FM-2 clone if I'm not mistaking, which impo is in the same family and probably equally awesome in it's own way.
Never messed with a Devi Vintage Fuzz Master, but it's also supposedly a decent replica of the FM-2.

In case you want to try something that sounds a little different from your old dano french toast: The Superfuzz isn't too different impo. Less octave, but otherwhise similar enough imo. If that's an option at all, I highly recommend the Wattson EFY-6. But the Boss FZ-2 owns the superfuzz game, plus it's probably one of the cheapest options in that category. Not for the faint of heart, and not very vintage-y either, it's got a more balls/compression/gain than your average direct clone. The Maxon 'f'uzz elements' air would be one of the best superfuzz clones out there...if it weren't overpriced.

I've had an HBE UFO for a few years now and love it. It's a Tone Machine.
For a cheap Octavio, EHX now has the Octavix, I might try that one soon.
Source Audio multiwave distortions do some cool octave stuff too, but it's a distinctly different flavor than analog fuzz.

Fuzzhugger Upper (no one has mentioned this!)...

Different octave up no one has mentioned:
LAL Octavella (strange one), Infanem Second Voice, Crystal Dagger (I think it is a bit weak, and I'm not into its ring mod but it is what it is), MASF Life Convulsion ( a pretty good sound all around fuzz too), I feel like I get a bit with my LAL 46 too (and its awesome).
