Anyone work from home/telecommute? What do you do?

Post by Deltaphoenix »

So, my job was relocated and I didn't choose to relocate with it. I have been working in the B2B Software Applications industry (Specifically HR Software) in sales related roles for 2 years. I have a BS in Marketing (because Marketing is BS... :p )

My wife and I are expecting a baby around May 6th this year.

My wife makes pretty good money (and so did I) and she has mentioned me becoming a stay-at-home Dad. To help make that happen, I would put in some gardening boxes in the backyard, maybe get a couple of chickens, look at getting solar power, become a coupon clipper, tighten the belt in other ways, etc.

I have some expenses that are more mine than ours and these would kind of break the budget for me staying at home. At a minimum, I would need to earn $600 a month, ideally $2k a month would be nice; put some money in savings and some in retirement while I take a significant amount time out from full-time work.

So, any ideas on part-time telecommuting work? I am looking at nights and weekend type customer service jobs (yuck but whatever). I am investigating virtual assistant jobs.

I am game to learn some computer programming. I also have construction skills (flooring, painting, metal roofs, own a pressure washer, changing out doors & windows and more).

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Take 2 years and go back to school. Online classes at a technical college for something like web design. More than likely, you'll be able to go to school for free and if you don't mind taking out loans and being super careful with your money, you'll have some left over to live on. Then when school is done, you'll already have a work from home type career. This is what my wife is doing now and its working out pretty well.

If you're going to do it, do it soon though. As soon as that kid learns to walk, productivity will become much harder.

Well, the problem with that plan is that I went back to school 4 years ago and graduated with my Bachelor's last May. I can't handle anymore school related debt.

You could apply to be an At Home Advisor.
Had a friend do it. Might be worth looking into it. Apple generally pays pretty well.

This thread is relevant to my interests.
Related fun fact: a Marketing degree is useless if you didn't do a bunch of networking/internships while you were still in school.

B2B Sales crushes Marketing, there are very few schools that have Sales Majors. A lot of B2B Sales people have marketing degrees. I really have about zero interest in Brand Management, etc. I interned in Sales Operations and moved into a Sales role.

But yes, I agree with your point. The people that I know that were really interested in Marketing and that are doing well interned at huge companies like Johnson & Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, etc. I also know some people that didn't do the above and work at crappy Marketing Agencies for $30k.

I know someone who left their "day job" to jump into online virtual assistanting and business consulting, so obviously opportunities are out there for that sort of thing.

I also have a lot of friends with construction skills who make more money than I do with my Masters degree. Education can certainly help, but by no means is it the only means to money.

Its not like I have any personal experience to back this up or anything, but I think that the ability to doing stuff online is only going to grow over time. If you can figure out ways to fill niches in that way and be working from home, you'll be successful.

Good luck!

I work from home full time (as like a full-time salaried dood), but I write for/on the internet, so I'm not sure I can be much help here.

I currently work only from home with Acid Splash Designs, but it wasn't easy. I also take care of my daughter during the day. When I have big orders coming, like right now I have several, it's rather challenging because you have to be able to distribute your time effectively between work and a child.

I honestly don't have any suggestions for jobs. I wish I did. Just find something you enjoy. Life is too short.
