Landlord Stories

Post by MrNovember »

I know you've all got them, so lets share some

My landlord is a petty little useless bitch

Part of our lease states that if we don't have the rent by the first of every month she can charge us a $50 late fee. I didn't think that was too unreasonable but she essentially takes every possibility she can to screw us over and make us pay that fee. For instance, my roommate had cancer and was gone for most of the year to have surgeries and what not. He told her he would be in the hospital for awhile but that he'd leave behind cheques for when he was gone. She never picked them up and then began harassing him for the late fees, even though, you know, he had cancer and was in the hospital and the cheques were at the house.

She did the same to me when I moved in (not the cancer part, just didn't pick up cheques and then told me that I owed her late fees because of it). She agreed to drop the late fees in my case as long as she could get the cheques the next day. Then like an hour later she messaged me saying she needs the money now or I owe her the late fees again, which wasn't a huge deal seeing as the cheques were literally just waiting for her already, but seriously what a cunt. This most recent time it was my fault really. I forgot to check my bank account at the end of the month and realized I didn't have enough to cover rent in it. I sent her a message asking if she wouldn't mind waiting a day to cash the cheque as I had to transfer the money. I thought she'd be a decent, understanding person (I have no idea what I was thinking  ). Nope she needs a late fee because I am a day late. She probably wouldn't have even known if I didn't tell her. Honestly, I would have preferred paying the more expensive overdraft fee than give her more money. But whatever, I'm playing her game now and just paid her in a bag of dimes and nickels.

And that's just the money issues we've had with her. When we moved in we found out she didn't have enough front door keys for everyone in the house. We asked her to make copies and she said she couldn't, the keys are too old. So we asked her to change the lock, and said we'd do it if we had to and asked if she'd reimburse us. She just outright refused and told us not to touch the locks. We ended up telling her that not having enough keys for the door was leaving us in an unsafe position as people kept getting locked out or leaving the door unlocked and that we would be changing the lock ourselves or withholding our rent cheques until the situation was resolved. She showed up the next day with copies of the key.

Then there was the time she went on vacation without telling us or leaving us any contact numbers and our furnace broke. This was like early December, it was cold, like really cold. We spent two days trying to fix it and trying to contact her before we told her if it wasn't resolved by the next day, we'd be calling a repair man and again would be withholding our rent cheques until we're reimbursed for the repair. She got back to us within an hour of that email with contact info and people to call to get it fixed.

I really don't want to think that she keeps just ignoring us until we tell her that we'll stop paying her, but it really seems that way.

Also the house is just a general piece of shit that she fails to properly maintain. The front steps broke months ago, which we immediately told her about, and she just got back to use last week to tell us to be careful and that someone would be by to fix them. We also kept having electrical issues (probably mostly related to the knob and tube wiring and the outdated circuit board), she never addressed the issue and it took my roommate and I a few hours to trouble shoot the problems ourselves.

I know I could possibly take a lot of these issues up in some sort of legal sense. I actually ran into a previous landlord who said he'd come by and inspect the house/review the whole situation for us. But for the most part they aren't really legal issues as much as they are just negligence and pettiness on her part.

Any way, I'm going to send an email to the off-campus housing office at the University to hopefully prevent any other students from falling into this shithole. But honestly, I just want to graduate and get out of this house. So 2 months to go.

Any way, end of rant. What's your story?

dude that sucks. i've never had a landlord actually charge me a late fee, and i'm never on time paying the rent.
i've had a few characters tho. one guy told us that we could burn the house down if we wanted to (b/c he had insurance).

my current place, when the girl was showing me the apt initially. we thought no one was home (we knocked and were in there for like 15 minutes talking). she's showing me the place and we go around the corner, and the guy who was living there but was moving out because he couldn't afford the rent, was like half naked napping. he woke up all bewildered. and i just thank god that I was w/ a girl instead of a dude because he calmed down pretty quickly at the sound of her voice.

it was pretty funny. he left me some frozen crab legs in the freezer...that i did not eat.

I don't think I've actually gotten a deposit back, and I'm a pretty mellow person. Landlords blow.

My landlord story sadly isn't finished, and at this point already compromises more than a 1000 pages worth of court documents...

The short story - our landlord, a professional slumlord, tried to illegally raise our rent, we refused to pay. He sued us, and in the process of getting ready to court we discovered that he'd been overcharging us since the day we'd moved in more than half a decade earlier. More than just overcharge, outright fraud - faked repairs, falsified city records, imaginary tenants on the rent rolls, that kind of thing. We go to court, we countersue, we win. That was 2008 - we've been in litigation since then. The landlord keeps appealing, keeps countersuing, stops paying the mortgage and puts the building in foreclosure to try and prevent us from being able to collect the money we're owed, etc.

The case finally made it to the (state) Supreme Court, who just ruled in our favor. We always knew the facts and the law were on our side, but it's a massive relief to know that the highest court in the land stands behind us. That said, it's still not over - even when the court rules in your favor, they don't actually do anything to help you collect whatever money they say your owed. Which in this case, between the overcharge and our legal fees, has already crossed the 6-figure mark likely to reach 7-figures.

The upside, aside from the eventual payday, is that we've been living rent free for half a decade and when we start paying rent again, because of some fun loopholes in the law, it'll be less than the price of a decent delay pedal.

TL:dr - the legal system is fucked even when it works in your favor.

I rented an apartment with some friends in an old house owned by a guy named Kirk Douglas. Not that Kirk Douglas. He was from the islands and a bunch of his "cousins" lived in the basement. I could never understand a thing they said except they yelled bumbaclot a lot. He drove a new Cadillac Escalade.
There was something wrong with the pipes upstairs one time so they came and knocked out the ceiling in the part of the bathroom above the shower. They never fixed it. It would rain plaster dust and other accumulated grossness while we showered. We eventually put up a piece of plexiglass and put a hole in the wall and stuck some christmas lights above.
He went away for the winter and left his cousin Hugh Grant in charge. They never got the oil furnace filled and my gerbil died. We stopped paying rent and the house was foreclosed on.

College is a weird time.

Considering how small your apartment is, I cant believe neither of you saw him. Was he underneath a pile of stuff?

when i lived in nashville, some 21 yearold knocked up my landlords 17 daughter. not wanting a screaming baby in her house shortly needless to say that bitch showed up drunk to my house on the 24th of the month at 9pm and tried to put padlocks on my house. after i called the cops and they showed she explained that i was late on rent. i showed them my electronic bankstatemnet showing the 1st was paid. and next rent wasnt due tll the 30th. than she tried explaining to the cops that she needs the house asap like tonight for her daughter to move in. needless to say the cops threw her off her own property that she was renting to me. also needless to say i was the fuck outa that house by the 1st and i had a crazy fucking party that trashed the shit outa that place. like crazy party. the flier stated "got used cat litter? bring it, fuck this house. I've been mostly lucky but have a few stories that maybe will bring a chuckle about renting.

The first time I rented an apartment in a house versus a complex we came home to our stuff all over the apartment. apparently the upstairs neighbor left his bathtub running and it leaked through and destroyed a bunch of shit in our fridge. our landlord was pretty quick to work on some of it and was classy enough to take some money off of our rent for the ruined groceries. whatever.

probably my best landlord was this dude named jesse. i moved into an apartment that was above the local diy venue. it was kind of loud but never inhabiting to me (i could seriously nap through grind and crust shows like it was nothing). anyhow. eventually he moved into the next door apartment and crazy things ensued.

his cock rock band started practicing in the basement which we could hear. annoying but almost cute. anyway. one night i was out on my back deck drinking, overlooking the cityscape at 1 or 2 am when his band van comes racing into the parking lot, trailer attached. they do a quick turn around and back into a space near my car and another car. i shout from my deck, "nice parking job!" and they yelled back, "not half bad when you're half cocked."

i was impressed. so his bandmates and their groupies all head up to the shared deck and set their cooler down before heading in. we walk over, steal a couple a brewskis and then head back to our side. eventually they start blasting the first full length by the sword and we all hung out for a few hours. i was impressed with jesses taste in the sword because they didn't suck and his band did. i burned him some cool cds which I'm sure he threw away. his son was autistic. straight up i think his name was tex. whatever.

after i moved out i had to hound jesse about getting my security deposit back and he always told me that he was tight on cash but would get it taken care of.

i finally bumped into him at one of my favorite bars and said hello. i didn't bring up the money at all. he bought me a beer and a few days later a check showed up. yolo, boys.

probably the shittiest renting experience i ever had was when my wife and i first started living together while we were dating. some friends of ours were moving to sweden and they had an awesome apartment that was above a business.

https://www.google.com/maps/@42.962788, ... 00!6m1!1e1

That shows the apartment. it has the cool breakfast nook window.

anyway, it was an awesome apartment and the backdoor and a sweet porch that had a little courtyard and i once threw a cigarette off the back deck and it landed on a fence post and my friend said, "if i threw this cigarette and it lands on that post the tigers will win the pennant." well he did and they did. a truly magical place.

anyway, while living in that apartment my wife and i became engaged. we were planning on staying there until who knows when. our wedding was in may. our lease was up may 31st. we would be on our honey money until june 16th. in MARCH the land lord called and told me that the business below us was changing hands and that the people taking over would like to live upstairs and that we would need to leave when our lease was up. pretty shit since we technically wouldn't be home and would have to move right before our wedding or try to finagle something and do so right after our honeymoon.

good guy shitty landlord fortunately let us end our lease early and move. the story really isn't all that shitty in comparison. whatever i'm kinda drunk.

I've actually had really good luck, mostly just slow to repair stuff but it's understandable. My current landlord is an old Italian lady, she's pretty cheap and doesn't really fix anything but I like her. She doesn't bother me, hasn't raised rent in 8 years as this area becomes stupid expensive, never had a lease AND refers to my 90's 4runner as "your beach wagon" .

I do have some insane sublet roommate stories including a crazy girl/lady who used to try to get in my bed while I was asleep

haha alright.

At one point I needed a short term and cheap sublet while I found a new apartment so I found a really cheap place with 2 girls who seemed fairly normal. Girl 1 was in her late 20s and girl 2 was in her late 30s, both nice, not crazy seeming, not attractive at all, just people to live with.

first week or so there, didn't really know the girls well yet: I bartended then so I came home late around 3 am, and walked up the stairs to and opened the apartment door which opens to basically face the bathroom. Girl 1 was tied up with leather belts naked in the bathtub and her boyfriend in his underwear was dripping candle wax onto her while Girl 2 in her underwear and bra sat on the toilet smoking and watching. I said Hi, they invited me, I said no and went to bed. Was weird but didn't care and figured to each their own.

Several weeks later: Girl 2 had made a few comments to me and got touchy when drunk/high (as she was most nights) but I told her several times i wasn't into it/her. I wake up in bed one night with that being watched feeling so I open my eyes and said girl is standing in my now open bedroom door looking at me. Basically says like "how ya doing?" in drunk voice and after a bit I get her to leave.
Similar thing happened the next week again at which point I was trying a lot harder to find another place but kinda figured eh people do weird shit when banged up.

Another week or 2 later I come home late and pretty hammered after work. As I'm changing for bed in my room said girl opens my door, walks into my room in her underwear, pulls her bra off and starts trying to stick her hands in my pants, after pushing her off and fighting with her for a few minutes (I was in pretty rough shape), some yelling and physically getting her out of my room she gave up and went into her room. I stuck my chair into my door and went to bed.

I woke up in the morning with a text from her "I'm sorry about last night but I don't regret it". I crashed with friends mostly after and moved out a few weeks later. :idk:
