Mantooth's Summer Road Trip 2015

Okay so I'm planning out a road trip some time in May, likely, to the west coast. I want to meet a friend in Cali as he arrives back from Japan and then head up the coast to Oregon and Washington. I know this is a ways off, but I figured I'd start planning now because work is boring. It'll also be helpful to know how many days I should spend out there and how much money I should save up. I also need recommendations for cheap, shitty motels or good camp grounds. I may have some friends along, I may not. If I don't, I have no problem sleeping in my car and just finding a place to shower occasionally.

So tell me anything! Where should I go? What do I have to see? I generally like being in less busy areas, in the woods or on the coast. I'd love to do some hiking out there too. I'd like to at least spend some time exploring some major cities too (San Fran, LA, Portland, Seattle). I'd really like to move to Washington or Oregon some day so I'll be doing my research. Any places I should avoid?

Also if anyone in those areas wants to meet up at some point, I'd like to meet some ILFers!! This will probably be mid-May and I'll be driving from Minneapolis so if you live somewhere that might be on the way, I'd be stoked to stop by!

I know Walmart parking lots are usually a good place to sleep in your car for one night. They let people in RVs do it all the time.

I've always wanted to visit Denton and do like Texas, this road trip is pretty flexible too So I'd be down to expand if my friends are.
