There's almost certainly a joke about being French and accepting defeat but I don't know if World War II jokes are universal (they're certainly not funny).

My people did not accept defeat. My people died to make sure as much English and French troops would make it to England. My people died fighting with the Resistance. Pétain was a fascist and a traitor. Many wanted to fight. De Gaulle wanted the government to move from Paris to Quimper so the combat could go on with the support of the British government and that, worst case scenario, we'd have a naval escape to the colonies. This was France. Not that senile defeatist prick who plotted to come to power and collaborate with the occupant, taking every decision he could to make sur we would lose.
Paris was liberated by the French themselves. The victory was a Revolution. New constitution, new social and economic rights (including universal health care) because the brave ones didn't only fought for freedom, equality and brotherhood, they wrote a political statement, "Les jours heureux" ("the days of happiness"). Everyday they some were arrested, deported, murdered, but they took the time to think about what our lives had to be like once fascists and collaborationists were where they deserved to be: in their fucking grave.

I laugh about stupid country stereotypes stuff like anybody else (especially the ones that concern me, living in a foreign country) but that one just annoys the fuck out of me too. It usually just shows a lack of understanding of history (and often a fair bit of arrogance).
