Bava has fantastic films! I own both his box sets. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions some I haven't even heard of. The horror stuff I'm pretty good on. I've seen 9/10 that have been listed. The ones I haven't watched is by choice mostly. hahaha

I'm a Jean Pierre Jeunet fan:

Mic Macs, Delicatessen, and City of Lost Children are all wonderful.

I'm also a huge Jean-Pierre Jeunet fan, including Alien: Resurrection... without subtitles.

Last week I watched Onibaba (1964) Japanese film about evil and humanity in the middle ages. Really great lighting and composition. You can get the Criterion collection version from Netflix which has some cool 8mm footage that belonged to one of the actors. Today I started "Kagemush" also really good and about middle ages Japan, some comical moments.

Both of those are great! Kagemusha seems kinda like a warm-up for Ran in some respects, but I still think it works nicely as a narrative.

Onibaba is amazing. I love Shindo's style and the themes of feminism in his work. That scene towards the end, jumping over the pit, sooo fucking good. Also just thought the sets and setting were perfect.

Yah, the story was a bit meh imo, but the lighting, composition, and (hello) the soundtrack! I watched the film with my Dad and he was impressed with how good the film looked etc. for the time. I could've face palmed my hand through my head, but instead I explained some stuff to him.
